5.0 out of 5 stars Call me crazy
but I have to say, I think this stuff is fantastic. I feel it gives me an energy boost and I have been feeling better and less depressed/more energetic since taking it. Could be a placebo effect, but hey, I'll take it!

I take a teaspoon several times a day in a cup of lemonade, juice or even plain water(tastier with lemonade or some sort of flavored drink...

5.0 out of 5 stars Call me crazy, May 23, 2009
This review is from: Now Foods SODIUM ASCORBATE (Health and Beauty)
but I have to say, I think this stuff is fantastic. I feel it gives me an energy boost and I have been feeling better and less depressed/more energetic since taking it. Could be a placebo effect, but hey, I'll take it!

I take a teaspoon several times a day in a cup of lemonade, juice or even plain water(tastier with lemonade or some sort of flavored drink mix). 1/2 a level teaspoon is the serving size and contains 1.69 Grams of Vitamin C(2820% of the RDA) and 210 mg of Sodium(8% of the RDA). Note that it is unlikely that people can absorb more than 2-4 Grams at a time.

Beware, in large doses, I understand that Sodium Ascorbate can cause issues with the digestive system. You'll want to work your way up if you intend to take a large dose. Also, it is important to taper off large doses as you can have rebound scurvy if you are taking Vitamin C regularly in large amounts and then stop. (I am not a doctor so please do not substitute this for medical advice).

This is great stuff if you are looking to take megadoses of Vitamin C which is an anti-oxidant. Ascorbate can be coupled with numerous other elements- sodium, calcium, chromium, zinc, etc. This is SODIUM and as such when you mix it in an aqueous solution, it tastes SALTY.

Now brand is not flavored and dissolves easily. It is 100% pure, buffered and pharmaceutical grade.

4.0 out of 5 stars I meant to get Calcium Ascorbate, but this works to take sour out of drinks, September 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought thinking I was getting Calcium Ascorbate (D'Oh!). They both serve my purpose (as I will describe), but the Calcium Ascorbate will add calcium (good) instead of sodium (neutral).

Anyway, my purpose is to take the sour out of fruit drinks, both fresh (lime)and commercial (Tang, lemonade, etc.). Using my chemistry background, I have used other bases with some success; sodium bicarbonate reduces acid, but adds characteristic baking soda flavor; sodium citrate is better, but not readily available, and requires a lot. Sodium or calcium ascorbate (neutralized vitamin C) should reduce acid AND add vitamin C.

The sodium ascorbate dissovles instantly, and is very effective at reducing acid flavor. I added 1 tablespoon to an entire container of powdered lemonade mix, and it markedly reduced the acid sourness.

The only downside is I detect a very slight hint of sodium flavor reminiscent of baking soda, but only very slight. I have ordered calcium ascorbate, and I expect it will work as well to reduce acid, have less sodium flavor, but may not dissolve as readily. I shall review its performance soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vitamin C Healing Powder, August 16, 2009
This is the best vitamin you can take every day. When I start to get sick, I take 1/2 teaspoon every 30 mins for 2-4 hours till bowel tolerance is reached, and it's better than an antibiotic. Try it, you'll "C".

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value, Great for Winter, January 27, 2012

This sodium ascorbate was a good price and arrived quickly. The powder was pure white and tasted just like any other sodium ascorbate powder I have ever had. The power of this vitamin cannot be understated; this gets us through some nasty winter viruses amazingly. I start dosing us up when the first signs of illness show. The kids get theirs in juice or smoothies, and the grownups have it with water. It tastes salty. Keep taking it until your bowels can't handle any more (you'll know), then pay attention to that dosage and do a little less the next day. Amazing stuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars The jet engine powder, December 20, 2010

Hi, all you health buffs. This will be about the buffers.

I have to say that I have more than average knowledge and experience about using Vit C and Ascorbate in different applications.

I was sold on this product since Costco raised their prices on vit. C, and Ascorbate was always to most cost effective way. Was happy to save my stomach with the buffer.

I originally took the same amount I used to take from unbuffered Ascorbate. You see when something is too much then first you develop gas, and then you develop diarrhea. However these symptoms are usually (at first) not from the active ingredient but from the buffer.

This stuff is the world champion in giving gas and diarrhea - with levels I easily tolerated in the past with unbuffered Ascorbate. So I believe that the buffering in this product limits the dose you can take and puts fear in your mind at the same time.

In all honesty my wife reports that she has had no similar problems, but I have not seen how much she takes and she usually takes pigeon size of everything.

Also, emotionall, it was nice about the unbuffered Ascorbate that I could make instant lemonade with it, just added a little honey for example and had a great drink.

This one you add to anything and it will kill the taste of anything. That simple.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not received order after several weeks, April 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this item several weeks ago and have not yet received it. I contacted the supplier through Amazon a few weeks back to check the status but no one has come back to me... I paid ~$70 which is a lot of money to me. I don't know what to do now as I cannot find this product in my country (South Africa).
