I definitely prefer the Now Foods chia seeds over the Greens+ chia seed which has a strange odor I have never smelled on another chia seed and tastes chemically; Greens+ must have sprayed them with something or maybe it is absorbing something from the plastic canister, I do not know.

I did a lot of research on chia seed before signing up for a monthly shipment from amazon's Subscribe & save program. This is white chia seed, and I have no preference over white or black, but there are some black seeds in these packages...some people claim they can taste the difference, but I find that hard to believe. I have extra an extra sensitive nose, and taste buds from years of serious cooking.

Read some of the history about native Central Americans using chia seed to sustain them while running messages over long distances. Chia seeds stay fresh for 5-10+ years, depending on how they are stored. They do not go rancid like flax seed, and they are MUCH more palatable than fish oil. Much higher in Omega-3s than fish oil or flax seed, they can be mixed into pretty much anything, either whole, ground, or as a gel (made from water and seeds). Putting just a tablespoon of this in my oatmeal in the morning and I am feeling "full" until dinnertime. One cautionary note - if you have a sensitive digestive system (like me) start slow with the chia seeds. I started with about a teaspoon of the gel in my oatmeal....now I put in about 1/4 cup in my oatmeal - can't taste it at all. In fact, I've not tasted the seeds in anything I've added them to. Keep in mind that one of the actions of chia seeds are that it helps a person not to be dehydrated - this is why the natives where able to run long distances without a lot of water through desert-type conditions. Chia seeds are a great emergency food to add to your emergency stash of water, flashlights, batteries, etc...we rotate our stock, first in first out, and keep about a three month supply for the whole family.

Chia seeds don't need to be cooked. They may be sprinkled onto salads, soups, cereal, puddings, rice, quinoa -- anything damp. They provide the crunch but become soggy quickly. They are extremely nutritious, extremely high in omega 3 and 6 oils. I highly recommend chia seeds. The only thing I don't like about these is they are not organic.

Although there are many sources of the regular (dark) chia seeds, you have to look a little harder to find the white ones. Some people perceive a difference in taste between the two types of chia seeds, while others don't. I make the Tarahumara energy drink from chia seeds, water and lime juice, and people who don't know what it is seem to react a lot more positively to it when it's made from the white seeds. I like the way Swanson packages its white chia seeds better than the bag that the Now brand uses; you can re-use the Swanson bottle to seal and store chia seeds from other brands.

I decided to try a bag of the Now Foods white chia because of the good price. I was disappointed in the product because of the amount of debris in the mix, including small twigs, foreign seeds, chaff, and other unidentified objects. I love to mix chia seed with drinks, but this mix is pretty unappetizing. I hate to throw a brand new bag of chia in the trash, but I'm afraid that is what I'll have to do.
