Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Allowing for a minor adjustment in scale, even five-year-olds can look back on their youth, and often do. Miller (Guess Who?; Can You Guess?) explores this beguiling childhood practice in her latest photo-illustrated volume: a racially-balanced group of six youngsters offers examples of how they have changed, from the time they were "little." A boy remarks, "When I was a baby, I had a favorite stuffed animal. Now I'm big! I take care of a real dog." A girl reflects, "When I was little I wore diapers and my parents dressed me. Now I'm big! I wear underwear, and I dress myself." Proud, beaming faces light up well-staged, full-color photographs. The same group photo, with a different child emphasized (the rest of the picture is deliberately faded), serves as opener for each child's reminiscence, now documented for posterity. True voices of Generation ABC. Ages 3-up.

From School Library Journal

PreS?Another successful offering from Miller. In this book, six school-aged children comment on how their lives have changed since they were babies. Eating, playing, dressing, and hygiene are among the topics explored in the text and in Miller's excellent full-color photographs. Beginning with individual photos of the subjects as babies, the same group shot of them is then used throughout the book, with each child highlighted one at a time with the use of a translucent overlay. This title should be useful for families expecting a new member; parents will appreciate the encouragement for older siblings to pass up the temptation to revert to a more dependent life style. A good choice for story time or one on one, this attractive photo essay will appeal to a wide audience.?Marsha McGrath, Clearwater Public Library, FL

This book is astonishingly appealing to toddlers. I bought it for my daughter when she was beginning nursery and it immediately became the favourite book for her and her little brother, who is two. They both insisted on having it read every day and would sit and leaf through the pictures by themselves. I think there is something easy to identify with about the photographs. I can't recommend this book too highly - I am having to buy a new copy as the first has been read to pieces!

I first checked this book out of the library last spring and now every time we go there my daughter wants to get it out. We've borrowed it five times! My daughter is fascinated with the pictures and the accomplishments of the children on the pages, especially now that she's doing some of the same things. The pictures are perfect and the book has a timeless quality about it.

My 5 year-old has just entered that stage when she is interested in babies and how she herself has changed over the years.

Margaret Miller's book just fits the ticket in demonstrating how children develop, and she and her brother(3) like this book.

It is nice that Ms. Miller pictures a little class of students and then explores each one individually, showing what each can now accomplish on their own.

"When I was a baby

I got milk from a bottle

and I slept in a crib.

Now I'm big!

I drink juice in a glass

and I sleep in my bed."

Three and a-half Stars. Check out the images that Amazon provides to see if the book is one you want. We found it a treat, but it is not one of those books that will be popular forever. [For toddlers you might want to take a look at Margaret Wise Brown's "Another Important Book". We didn't like it--it was too babyish-- but other parents gave it good reviews.]
