Grade 5-10?The theory behind this book is that perhaps kids will pay attention to their peers more than their elders when it comes to safety. Letters were solicited from patients ages 5 to 19 about accidents that happened to them or their families. Injuries and illnesses resulted from biking without a helmet; improper footwear for various activities; camping without proper gear; playing with fire; eating poison berries; not wearing a seatbelt; putting scissors in an electric socket; playing on an escalator; improper handling of fish hooks, guns, pocket knives; and much more. This list demonstrates the variety of problems examined, some of which had life-threatening results and others that had minimal effects. Each letter is accompanied by a sidebar that offers brief educational comments by medical staff. Illustrations by some of the young people are included, as are some photographs of ambulances, etc. This is a book that adults will wish kids would read and take to heart, but in fact it doesn't beg to be read. There is no thread to lead readers from one letter to the next. The table of contents shows an alphabetical listing by topic (bees, bicycles, burns). Basic safety rules are appended. Well intended, but unlikely to attract readers.?Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston
