Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Approximately 30,000 Americans kill themselves annually; since the suicide rate is significantly higher among the elderly, this scholarly, thoroughly referenced work provides needed information about a socially invisible segment of our society. Fifteen contributors (among them are educators, nurses, and physicians) provide insight into this controversial public health issue. Recognizing symptoms and exercising preventive treatment are explained and encouraged. One piece addresses the pertinent and timely issue of elders in long-term care facilities. Case studies, statistical tables, and a bibliography of humor therapy provide practical suggestions for families and healthcare professionals. Suicidal elders are studied from a religious, medical, and psychological perspective. Also included is an examination of society's ambivalent attitudes toward the assisted suicide actions of the controversial Dr. Kevorkian. Although it lacks an index and is occasionally repetitive, this is a timely and excellent reference.
