4.0 out of 5 stars Great Pick up!, August 8, 2001

I absolutely LOVE the Dream Warriors. It brings me back to the greats of early 90's rap music. I agree, they are an unremembered rap group, but this record is so fun and will bring you back too. Thier sound is a bit more progressive than most rap music of the time, but their style is one that can definitely be appreciated today. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars A new style, December 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Now the Legacy Begins (Audio CD)
This is an album that was definently overlooked by many. I have not heard one song on here that wasn't innovative in any way. Dream Warriors stand out from all of the "pop" and "gangsta" so called hip-hop. When listening to this album, you notice a strong jazz influence. There are also tracks on here that have a mystic sound to them. Don't wait on this album any longer because this is a classic, take my word for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Definition Of A Bombastic Rap CD, December 25, 2006
This review is from: Now the Legacy Begins (Audio CD)
I really don't know why they didn't get much credit or air play, but this CD is, in my opinion, one of the most dynamic rap cds ever produced. Their sound was a rare thing only used by a handful if not less artists. De La Soul, Digable Planets are 2 that come to mind. They had a fairly big single with My Definition of a Bombastic Jazz Style, however far from as big as it should have been. This cd is nothing but a nice happy place. There is no drama or tales of struggle, just simple fun music. This is quite a gem, pick it up, its what being unique is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dream Warriors! Wow! I remember this album!, November 21, 2001

This review is from: Now the Legacy Begins (Audio CD)
it's great. i've actually looked for this album in music stores but couldn't find it until i remembered that amazon has the song title search (i didn't remember the name of the musicians). i did remember the names of 2 songs though: "Face In The Basin" and "Do Not Feed The Alligators".

The music is kind of like a laid-back rap, with similar sound to 'De La Soul' as others mentioned. i'd buy it mostly for the nostalgia factor, but also because of those crazy lyrics and the corny sound. my cousins and i listened to this stuff when we were kids and we still love it.

I am no expert on rap music, but this has been a favorite of mine since the day it came out. Playful, melodic, charming and unique. "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style" is a strong cut, as is "Ludi" (a song about someone's mother's favorite board game!) "Follow Me Not" (addressing the idea that you shouldn't 'follow' anyone) and "Wash Your Face in My Sink."

The US market ignored it, but they had minor hits in the UK with "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style" and "Wash Your Face in My Sink."

This CD is from an album 18 years old and it still sounds fresh and unique. Even the "lesser" cuts flow well within the context of all the music on this disk.

In 1991, a Canadian Duo, The Dream Warriors (consisting of King Lu & Spek) hit the U.S. with their debut single "And Now The Legacy Begins". An album consisting of a mixture of cutural music, jazz, and rap, similar to the styles of Digital Planets, and some may say that it gets very close to A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul. Seeing that such albums as The Low End Theory, and De La Soul Is Dead came out the very same year, another group with a similar style and less popularity that debuted was going to be pushed to the side, and get slept on. It's very unfortunate that this would happen to the Dream Warriors first album, because this duo could put out some quality music.

One can hear the jazz break on "My Definition Of Boombastic Jazz", with the help of the "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones sample (the same sample used as the Austin Powers' theme song). A fun standout would be the album's title track, which has a funky bass line. The next track, "Tune From The Missing Channel" has another jazzy tune to standout. "Journey On" has some great lyrics over a deep drum beat ("You couldn't vibe to the bass/ but you look like a bass head...")

Some of the tracks may have a little too mellow sound to them, and most of it is due to the sound quality (this album despritely is in need of digital remastering, if haven't done already). If you enjoy early rap styles with a dab of jazz flavor, you may like this one here. The beats here will move your head, I can almost gurantee that. Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a head-bobber!, September 12, 1999
This review is from: Now the Legacy Begins (Audio CD)
This is a group who deserve more recognition than they have received from the hip-hop scene. Their style and flow is reminiscent of the Roots and De-La-Soul. If you like that mix of Jazzy beats with lyrical mastery, then this group is definitely not one to overlook.
