Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

One of the best chroniclers of modern Brazilian music, the hip Ziriguiboom label has discovered such diverse and talented artists as Bebel Gilberto, Zuco 103 and Apollo Nove, providing a stamp of quality on every album it issues. Here it partners once again with the like-minded American label Six Degrees, who issues The Now Sounds Of Brazil 2 domestically as part of its Travel Series. Featuring seven of the label's artists doing two songs apiece, this collection presents new versions of Brazil's laid-back and sexy bossa nova while updating it either by adding modern electro sounds to the tradition (DJ Dolores, Bossacucanova) or creating great new bossa nova songs (Celso Fonseca, Cibelle) that hold up well next to the acoustic classics. Ten of the 14 songs are previously released, but this is nonetheless a great introduction to today's Brazilian music at its best. And folks in the know will certainly dig the exclusive new tracks. --Tad Hendrickson

4.0 out of 5 stars The Exclusives Make This Purchase Worthwhile!!, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Now Sound of Brazil 2 (Rmxs) (Audio CD)
I first came to the genius that is Six Degrees Records when I heard "The Now Sound of Brazil" in late 2002. That recording opened my ears to a whole new world of great modern music, which I have been satisfying ever since. Now comes the sequel to the original five star effort, and it's certainly a worthy follow up. You have excellent remixes from Bebel Gilberto (which is superior to the original song) and Zuco 103, but the song that pushes this over the top is the one that closes the disc, the Apollo 9 remix of "Trancelim de marfim." Since the original track also appears in the disc (and is also excellent), it's nice to be able to compare the two tracks. The remix opens with the sound of plates and silverware clinking, then leads into an amazing string arrangement. Both songs are excellent in their own right, but the right has me pushing the repeat button, and fully justifies this purchase!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Compilation of what Ziriguiboom's been up to, March 30, 2006
This review is from: Now Sound of Brazil 2 (Rmxs) (Audio CD)
Ziriguiboom's a label out of Europe that specializes in new Brazilian music. They're a pretty stark contrast to the likes of a Far Out records, which has served as a wonderful springboard of terrific established artists. Ziriguiboom/Crammed have focused their attention on some of the younger and in some cases, more experimental acts. Some of the artists on their label include (and included) Suba, Zuco 103, Bebel Gilberto, Trio Mocoto, DJ Dolores and the list goes on. This is volume two of their "Now Sound of Brazil" series. But don't be fooled - Ziriguiboom had a sampler out in 1999 too titled "Brasil 2Mil", which to me was their best and most effective and in some ways, would render this one volume 3 instead.

Still, volume 2 is pretty good. The sampler does a terrific job of giving you an idea of what to expect from the new artists on the label and what some of the other artists have been up to. It opens up with a cut straight from Bebel Gilberto's remix album before diving into a spirited track on Bossacucanova's latest (released in 2004). It's still a good track to me, collaborating with Zuco 103, which shows how much the group's matured. You then have Apollo Nove's "Inexplicata" before Cibelle's "esplendor". I dug cibelle's track - nice acoustic sound. Other good tracks on here were both of Celso Fonseca's tunes - one given a rare remix by Da Lata, Apollo Nove's "86" stuck out, and I liked DJ Dolore's "Trancelim de Marfim" too. Funny but Cibelle's gone in a different direction in some ways; maybe I have to give it more time but "Meu Amor" was pretty darn abstract to even me... I don't know if I'd label this album chillout though since some of the songs are a bit more intense and again, abstract. But you do have some relaxing melodies with Celso Fonseca and Cibelle's first cut on this.

I liked this compilation. it gives you an idea of what some of the artists are up to. But it wasn't without fault - that is to say, I wasn't a fan of all of the tunes here or that were used. In fact, many of the songs weren't the best out of the projects the artists have recently undergone IMO, which doesn't do them any real favors when it comes to building expectations. Still, it's a good sign that Ziriguiboom is still in the business of breaking down boundaries and putting out some interesting music and exciting musicians. If you like this, be on the lookout for some of these artists feature releases. A shame... I hear Bebel Gilberto's coming out with a new album for late 2006/2007, but no teasers are on this one.

This is the USA release, distributed by Six Degrees Recrods. So it will be cheaper than the imported version (you can thank Six Degrees!)

2.0 out of 5 stars NOW SOUNDS, November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Now Sound of Brazil 2 (Rmxs) (Audio CD)
Not quite as "now" as I thought.. this collection is a bit more retro than expected, but still a kind of mellow Brazil beat that can be enjoyed. "Electronic"?.. not really...
