Editorial Reviews

One look at Suphala, a stylish Indian-American beauty with flowing dark hair, a trim figure and a sensual allure, and you would never guess her instrument of expertise is the tabla drums. In fact, it's rare to find a woman tabla player in general. Suphala is all about breaking down barriers and her debut album The Now proves that. A spirited mix of powerful percussion, piano, techno loops, vocal samples and more rhythm than you can shake a drumstick at, The Now is a propulsive journey into groove driven by an infectious tabla beat. Suphala is the protégé of illustrious teachers Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain - training which is apparent after hearing her complex beat mosaics firsthand. The Now definitely stuns. From its urban, frenetic mixing to the inclusion of vocals by a smorgasbord of guest artists (including Norah Jones), The Now by Suphala is definitely one that you will surely want to own.- Suphala is a are one to be playing the tablas! The Now by Suphala is a spirited mix of powerful percussion, piano, techno loops, vocal samples and more rhythm than you can shake a drumstick at.

5.0 out of 5 stars San Francisco under a groove and Suphala are great!, January 12, 2006

This album has some nice vocals with breakbeat, and represents a nice fusion of world elements and electronica.

The album, San Francisco under a groove also has great rare artists like, Tetris, Will Felt, Irina Mikhailova, Superbacana, etc. Really good new jazz, breakbeat electronica. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The tabla Rocks! Suphala is da bomb!, September 16, 2007

This review is from: The Now (Audio CD)
I'm not sure how I heard this music. I think I was surfing amazon after I had listened to and put The Cosmic Game by the Thievery Corporation in da basket, and came across this. If you're into like, ethnic drumming and stuff, like Richard Feynman's approach to drumming, like Pancho Sanchez and his approach to conga's (though he could tone those horns down a little, sorry trumpet guys) and like the deep rich background of the electronic background, then you should lend an ear. There's just one song that kind of baffled me, sounded like a bunch of instruments being tuned in and out of tune, but it only lasts for about a minute. I'm sure there's a reason for the inclusion of that...that's artistic license.

I ran across Suphala by accident and enjoyed the clips I heard. I love the CD though it is completely different from anything in the rest of my collection. I highly recommend it for your collection.
