5.0 out of 5 stars This old broad can sing rings around the rest!, August 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Now & Then (Audio CD)
Having seen Clairborne Cary do her cabaret act in L.A. twice, I became an instant fan. She can by turns sound a bit like Doris Day or Barbra Streisand or Julie Wilson. Listening to this album of songs recorded but stored under her bed until the 90s, and the new songs she recorded in 95 it is interesting to hear the change in her voice from young Broadway ingenue to the husky, smoky sound of a dame who's been around the block. NOBODY CAN SING "RIBBONS DOWN MY BACK" or "I DON'T WANT TO PLAY IN YOUR YARD/MEAN TO ME" BETTER, AND HER "MUSIC MACHINE" IS A RIOT! For the time being I will enjoy hearing this album for the 6th or 7th time this week!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated and oh so wonderful!, July 29, 2002

I only recently discovered Claiborne Cary. If Diana Krall is overrated, Claiborne Cary is truly underrated. Her style and phrasing are perfect. A great album. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clay's brilliant recording, July 3, 2001

This review is from: Now & Then (Audio CD)
Claiborne Cary's Now and Then recording should be considered a classic. The mix of songs sung in her younger years, along with, more contemporary recordings, indicate brilliance of an artist and two stages of life. Of course, seeing her live is a real treat and spectacle. Totally underappreciated by the masses, Ms Claiborne Cary remains a favorite of those in the know. Let's spread the word... Trolley Song and Come Rain or Come Shine are Grammy-worthy recordings!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Jazz Diva Who Deserves Stardom!, February 24, 2001

Claiborne Cary recently appeared here in Atlanta at Libby's! What a wonderful show, what a wonderful performer! Her pop-jazz renditions of such great composers as Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and others had the audience mesmerized. Her "Something Cool" outdid June Christie because being there in person really makes this song come alive. I purchased both her CDs and all I can say is: My word, this lady is fantabulous! Why isn't she more famous?

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE LAST GREAT CABARET SINGERS, February 12, 2001
This review is from: Now & Then (Audio CD)
Claiborne Cary is one of the best cabaret singers I ever heard! A great personality, charisma and, of course, a great voice. Ethel Merman once told Judy Garland "We are the last belters", but what a pity she couldn't listen to Miss Cary! I think she is much more gifted than better-known singers such as Liza Minnelli or even Barbra Streisand: she is more healthy than the first and less contrived (not at all, actually!) than the second. You must get this CD and realize what it means to sing and perform live!! Long Life to Miss Cary!

We saw her recently in New York and the voice is definitely still there and she's funnier than ever. An evening with Miss Claiborne Cary is a joy to be remembered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic!, September 19, 2000

No one is better than Claiborne Cary in concert. Her "Live at Danny's" album is a great, great example of cabaret at its finest. This album is also excellent as it shows how she has changed/progressed from a youthful ingenue to a pepperly old broad with a set of magical pipes! Get it! Get both!
