Book Description

Now Emmaline Carson has settled into her career as a graphic designer, though she’d rather be painting or shopping with her sister Layla. But then – in the years before she went to art school in Paris – she was a shy, awkward teenager with frizzy hair, a flat chest and a massive crush on the boy across the street, Cole Marlowe. Too bad her incredibly hot neighbor only had eyes for Layla.
Cole is now a confident, laid-back attorney who’s even hotter than he used to be. He’s planning to stay single while working his way up the corporate ladder – until he’s knocked off course by a chance run-in with Emma.
Everything is different between Cole and Emma now. He finally sees her in a way she only dreamed of, and their hot chemistry is fueled by a growing friendship. But Emma’s deception of her sister – who wants Cole for herself – and the secret Cole’s been keeping for more than a decade threaten to tear apart what’s only just begun. Because sometimes the only thing standing in the way of now is then.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is one of those novels that you become emotionally attached to. I felt like I relived high school right alongside the characters, while watching them become amazing professionals in their own fields. I laughed, I cringed, I cried 'aww' and squealed like a little girl." -- Jonel of Pure Jonel Book Reviews

"I just can't say enough about this book. You can tell that Brenda Rothert poured her soul into this book! You can feel the emotions of the characters."  -- Twinsie Brenda of Twinsie Talk Book Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet with Heat...loved it!! December 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
What a sweet romance! This is my second read from Brenda Rothert and can't wait to read the next. She has such a smooth, easy going writing style. This story follows Cole and Emma after they meet again for the first time in over a decade. However, we also get a taste of what these characters were feeling and experiencing all those years ago with flashbacks from the past.

Emma is one of those girls that seems unsure of herself. That is mainly due to having an attractive and popular cheerleader sister. She begins as an awkward preteen looking to find herself and evolves into a talented young woman. She is content and doesn't have the need for a man in her life.....

Cole...sigh...Oh, sorry!! Cole is one of those boys that you look at from afar because you know that you could never be good enough to claim him. He begins as the hot, popular football player that can have any girl he wants. He works hard at everything he does and becomes an attorney with little time on his hands to truly enjoy life.

Now, I know I said this was a sweet romance and it is. However, just when you are thinking "What a nice, sweet, G rated book this is".....BAM!! The author turns up the heat. Holy Heck! This isn't raunchy, but man is it hot!

Even though this story ends with a 'happy ever after' and no cliffhanger, you are still left with wanting more of the swoon worthy Cole and Emma. Now I'm off to read Now and Again...stay tuned!

4.0 out of 5 stars ARC review- engaging read! September 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a love story. About ordinary people with regular lives finding an extraordinary connection that changes everything.

Emma is an artist. She is beautiful, confidant and independent.
Cole is a lawyer. He is gorgeous, determined and smart.

Together they're sweet, sexy and the passion-whew. Out of this world.

So what is the issue?
Emma is a little sister hidden by her Layla's lawyer big sister shadow. When Emma was on her own in Paris she was strong. Her own person. Back in Chicago she is the little sister worried about hurting or angering her adored big sister.
Emma has had a crush on Cole since she first saw him over twelve years ago. Cole is four years her senior- and never saw the shy, cute girl across the street as a romantic option.

I think Emma gets too caught up in hurting Layla. This is probably the big sister in me talking. Difficult to understand crushing your own heart and chance at happiness to keep family happy.

As an aside-when the s*** hits the fan at Christmas the fight between Emma and Layla is fantastic and hilariously epic. Their dad is awesome.

Cole is magnetic, to Emma and the readers. I loved how he kept thinking he was being too much of a girl thinking he wanted more than Emma did. He is ready to go all in! Never mind the fall out. He is determined to be with Emma. He never gives up even when it would be easier. And he is tempted. He loves Emma and opens up to her as he has never done with anyone before. Giving her the key to his past and one of the reasons he is so driven.

Emma and Cole both need to allow themselves some distance from their families to be able to see clearly what they want and need out of life. This book is a heartfelt journey to where they both belong- in the now, with each other.

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't get it December 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
All the reviews were so good on this book that I wondered how I was missing it. It just didn't seem to get there for me. I liked Em and Cole, that wasn't the problem. Of course the older sister is a bitch, with the morals of an alley cat so she is not one you are going to like but I had a hard time trying to figure out why Em feels she needs to give her Cole. If he was lusting after the sister I could see getting out of the way but he seems to be trying to avoid her at all costs. Could he really know her sister better than she does?

I did quit reading. I just couldn't generate any excitement for these two. For one thing, it seems their lives were boring as heck and Em seems clueless. Cole invites her out for dinner. She goes. BUT....it is not a date, they are just hanging. At no time did he indicate it was anything but a date for dinner but yet she can't see it as a date. Clueless. I just couldn't get going with this one. Obviously I am the only one as it seems all the reviews were glowing at what a fantastic love story. She indicated she slept her way thru school in Paris. Her sister is trying to sleep her way thru the law firm where she works and with anything else that isn't husband material...because we all know how she gets if she has to go without sex!! The slutty attitude just ruins a character for me. I guess I sort of lose respect for who she really is. Maybe it is the times and I am just too old to understand and accept it. I don't know, just decided to move on past this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a really great story September 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Now and Then.

It isn't a complicated story by any means but I really welcomed this tale of unrequited love that is finally realized.

Emmaline Carson was in love with her older neighbor, Cole Marlowe all through high school. But he being 3 years older than Em, he just never thought of her as anything more than just the kid next door.

10 years pass and after both have established their lives and have promising careers, they meet again by chance and decide to start spending time together mostly as friends.

But Em and Cole secretly have feeling for each other and as time passes, both know that they are hopelessly in love with the other.

Emmaline's sister Layla has her sights set on Cole but Cole only has eyes for Em. Both Em and Cole struggle with their feelings and you wonder if they will finally get to be happy and be together.

I loved their story. It was a really nice read with not a ton of angst and that was really refreshing for a change.

I give it 4 1/2 stars and look forward to the second book in the series.

Give this one a try, you will not be disappointed.
