Mountain Folk way before it was hip,

Long before Alison Krauss took the stage, Trapezoid lit up east coast theaters [mostly small ones] and played acoustic folk with technical ability only known to pickers. This album was one that I have been looking for forever. I listened to the vinyl until the grooves wore out as a kid in West Virginia. Now I can listen to it again and again. If you can appreciate true acoustic string picking and pure mountain harmonies, you will love this album.

Trapezoid-Now and Then,

One day I was in Tower Records in San Francisco. I saw this album in the folk section and the cover picture just grabbed me. I knew of the band as a hammered dulcimer quartet, but this was a new line up. I bought it and took it home and was transported by the sound of the instruments and voices. A few years later I helped promote one of their shows and got to know the band and ended up working for them as audio tech, van driver and office assistant.
Mixing Trapezoid live night after night was one of the highlights of my life. They made magic, pure and simple. With the death of Freyda Epstein, we can never hear that sound again. Luckily we have this album. Even if you're only mildly interested, buy it. You can thank me later.

Trapazoid played Glenville State College Ballroom in 79 or 80. I thought I was going to a bluegrass show. What I heard blew me away. I saw them many times after that and never failed to get chills at the beauty of their performances. I was really sad when they broke up. This is one of their best albums, along with Cool of the day. They were a group that every time I saw them I felt lucky to be in the presence of such beauty of music.

I got hooked on Trapezoid in 1981 through a friend. Even saw them live once. Great dulcimer music, beautiful voices and arrangements. I bought this to replace a copy that was stolen (the theives had good taste -- it was the only CD they took!).
If you like "traditional" music, get it! |
