Editorial Reviews

(2-CD set) With a career that has brought us an incredible twenty-one studio albums, British folk legends Steeleye Span's history includes a number of records that stand out as landmarks. 1974's Now We Are Six was one such moment, an album that saw the band expand both their line up to a six piece and with it their sound to explore even further their own unique blend of rock and folk music. A critical and commercial success, the record provided a home to a number of songs that are now thought of as classics. Thirty-seven years later and Steeleye Span find themselves at another milestone. Having established the longest serving lineup of their career, they underwent another change of personnel and reemerged as a six piece for the first time in many years. There could be no better time to go back to that iconic record, performing it in its entirety alongside a selection of classics, rarities and favorites from other albums. The result was pure Steeleye magic, captured for posterity here.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love Steeleye Span February 4, 2014
By BruceK
Format:MP3 Music
I have loved Steeleye Span ever since they opened for one of the first concerts I saw as a teen, the 1974 Jethro Tull Passion Play concert ... in which they were fabulous, and at the height of their electrified glory. They were awesome and opened up a whole new frontier of music for me. I had never heard music like that before and they fit right in with Jethro Tull at the time.

The album Now We Are Six, I believe was even produced by Mr. "Jethro Tull", i.e. Ian Anderson himself.

Now, that said, looking back, this is the album now where I think Steeleye Span lost it. Having now previously gone back and bought and listened to their previous albums back to the Martin Carthy days, I now prefer the earlier more acoustic stuff, although "Parcel Of Rogues" and "Below The Salt" are probably my absolute favorites. I love the Celtic folk flavor and the quirky stories in the songs.

I stopped really buying every album and following Steeleye Span with "Rocket Cottage" and "All Around My Hat" ... that's the time when I started going backwards into the past albums and learning about their wonderful songs and the members who had come before. Went off into a whole English Folk jag for a while ... Martin Carthy - Skewbald! Yeah!

So, these new old songs don't really seem to appeal so much except to the nostalgia in me. They are fun to hear, but not as rousing, energetic, emotional or unique as the original versions for me. They're also not as well produced as the studio version, this being a live album. Like most live album this is more for the dedicated fan.
