5.0 out of 5 stars THE ONE AND ONLY LOUIS, December 11, 2000
Louis Armstrong is definitely in a class by himself. This CD represents his work in films for MGM from 1943-1965 (The Strip, Cabin in the Sky, Glory Alley, High Society, and When the Boys Meet the Girls.) Selections range from instrumentals to vocals and in addition to Louis you will find Bing Crosby and Jack Teagarden on a couple of tracks. Louis' scenes were the highlights of the mediocre film HIGH SOCIETY and all of his soundtrack performances from that film are here, including the delightful "Now You Has Jazz" with Bing. A highlight is his outtake performance of "Ain't It the Truth" from CABIN IN THE SKY. A must have for any Louis or jazz fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hipster spies with his mystic eye, something that begins with--Great sounds from Satch, March 10, 2009

Neither the Reader of this Review nor it's Author is an idiot, so nobody has to say that Louis Armstrong plays great Jazz. Too obvious for words.

But the sound reproduction on this CD is wonderful! MGM's recording people caught both Louis' voice and instrumental performances beautifully, perhaps better than anybody else, ever.

And the High Society Calypso can always make you smile.

So go ahead & buy this one, Jazzbo! You'll never regret it.

The Hipster gives it a Big Thumbs UP!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection, with many outtakes & great sound, July 31, 2011
Where do you start? Fantastic sound, much of it in true stereo, featuring Louis' (interracial--Satch was WAY ahead of his time) All-Stars, with the great Trummy Young. Vocal tunes ranging from the semi-spiritual "Shadrack" to the title tune from "Glory Alley" (read "Tin Pan Alley--the roughest place in town). Tunes from Louis' New Orleans upbringing "Oh Didn't He Ramble"), and great interpretations of the day's standards ("Ain't Misbehavin'"). And the cherries on top-the joyful "High Society Calypso" and "Now You Has Jazz", with Der Bingle (Crosby). Only a few numbers are dated or cornball. Unlike the non-jazz garbage Louis was churning out at the end of his career, such as "Hello Dolly" etc.
