SOULFUL COLLECTION,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

In the five decades that Cliff Richard has entertained us, he has been brave enough to venture into all kinds of different styles, and with this one, he "covertly" brings us into the contemporary Christian mode. "The Only Way Out" while originally intended to be another hit single in the style of "Devil Woman" or "We Don't Talk Anymore" is really a song about turning to God when things go wrong. Most of the other songs are likewise spiritual in nature, including his tasty version of Chris Rice's "Little Town," which is the Christmas carol altered in tempo and in melody, but nevertheless catchy and infectious. Cliff also does a nice rendition of the standard "The Water is Wide." The darker tunes, "Son of Thunder" and "Thief in the Night" are also songs concerning the second coming, and how we should prepare ourselves. As always, Richard's voice is crystalline and the musicians and arrangements perfect. It's hard to believe that Richard has been able to maintain a level of popularity, that only few have been able to sustain. Enjoy this one, it's one of his best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A great classic!,

My all time favourite from this album is 'Thief in the Night'. It is an incredible song taking you from slow to fast back to slow. It also has an awesome message that Time will not last forever. The other songs are great too, but some highlights for me are 'It Has To Be You, It Has To Be Me', 'The Water Is Wide', and 'Be In My Heart'

THIS ALBUM CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!,

This review is from: Now You See Me Now You Don't (Audio CD)
If You are A Cliff fan and don't know this record, You have NO idea what you are missing. This is a "Christian Album." But if I did not tell you that, You would not know it! Most Christian rock albums can bore someone to death! 10 to 14 tracks of...GOD said this and Jesus said that, Can get old quick even for a christian. This CD almost never mentions God or Jesus by name so you can take them as normal songs about any man/woman relationship. This is the best part of the record. Take the songs to heart about your love life and they will make sense to you. Or take them as you talking to GOD, Either way it is very moving. Cliff said himself EMI Records in 1982 had no clue this was a Christian album when they first heard it. They just thought they were great songs. Take them the way they hit you most and you will find comfort and hope.

Thief In The Night - Get It Here!,
This review is from: Now You See Me Now You Don't (Audio CD)
I originally heard "Thief In The Night" in 1987 on cassette on "Walkin' In The Light". The CD of that title that was re-issued offers a live version of TITN that is no where near as powerful as the original. If you've experienced Thief In The Night, this is THE place to get it - this CD offers (finally) a digital experience of the classic masterpiece.

I had the LP album and now am buying the cd. The songs were very good. The production was great. And his voice was great.
I haven't heard the rest of his catalog - just this album. Any suggestions where to go next? I like the spiritual angle of this album.

Still Listening to Cliff Richard,

Discovered this super artist in the late 70s. I must have at least a dozen albums and at least 6 or more CDs including this one. Don't know what it is, but when I hear his voice well it is very special. Lot of people in the United States have never heard of him when I might talk to them about a song or say his name. He did have a few hits here that many people would recognize but would not know who is singing. I treasure my collection of his material that I did buy and held on to - mostly vinyl. I still enjoy listening to them. This album was always one of my favorites along with the one called "Silver" (not sure that was the original name - need to pull that out and listen to it soon). Thank goodness he is appreciated in Britain. To me, it was the emotion he could bring out in a song. At times, it might not have been a super song, but his interpretation of that song could bring such enjoyment and joy. Feel very fortunate that I discovered his music!

Contains the HTF Version of "Thief In The Night",
This review is from: Now You See Me Now You Don't (Audio CD)
For me I was after the original version of "Thief In The Night". There is at least one other version of it on "Walking in the Light" but that's recorded live. This CD contains it as I remember it in 1987.
