I found this book entirley by accident at Border's. This one was right up my alley! Since Amazon does not give an official synapse, I will try my best with out giving much away:

A seven-year old boy comes home from school one day to find his entire famiy (minus the father) butchered. Whats worse is that the killer is still there and waiting for him to come home. Little does he know that the killer is someone he knows and is very close with. You find out pretty early on who the killer is but there is a reason for that. The boy has psychic connection with the killer and finds out that his family was not the only victims and will not be the last. Not by a long shot. This particular killer has a penchant for killing babies and pinning them to their mother's dead bodies with broken golf clubs, a sign post or a skewer. So you can expect plenty of violence and gore.

The story starts off at with a bang and slows a little at the middle but only to flesh out the characters and plot, it picks up again at the end with a bloody ending I thought I figured out but was presently surprised to be wrong. This was my first book by R. Patrick Gates and I am really glad that I bought this because it was an entertaining, violent read with plenty of dead bodies. A suspenseful and disturbing read, fans of Ed Lee, Bryan Smith and early Dean Koontz will enjoy this!

Imagine coming home on Friday, stress of the day is still palpable but the mind is more relaxed, the ticking clock no longer an issue for the next two days and the weekend can begin. But what if your house isn't the safe sanctuary that it always appeared to be, what if there's a blood hungry maniac in there, waiting for the unsuspecting victim, talk about horrible bad luck. That was certainly one unlucky day for seven year old Billy Teags, his weekend of fun and games was not going to happen this time, considering that his whole family has been killed and he's the last little fly in the house. When he finally sees the spider he's a little too late, there is no escape, just a hope that he can hide and survive. His advantage is the knowledge of the house, but his major disadvantage is the killer himself, someone who both shocks and scares and confuses the little boy and the reader as well.

The story was gruesome but it also held a lot of sharp tension, reading about Billy's struggles was tough considering he was a kid and all, especially watching him try to hide and wait out someone that was not going to go away, someone who was taking the whole house apart, looking for his victim. This was very different from what I normally read in horror but enjoyable never the less. I have always like Gates and his bizarre and disturbing imagination and this indeed was an interesting morsel from him. There are a lot of trips back into the past which are important considering that the family is all ready dead when the book begins. Gates still makes the characters believable with his creative and intense use of flashbacks and past history woven into the story and sets the tale up for an explosive ending. It took me a while to read this but when I had time to sit down and read in peace I had a hard time putting it down, I was always wondering what was going to happen next, and most of it only got worse and worse. This had some gross bits in it but in all honesty they paled when compared to his incredibly shocking and great Grimm Memorials, which I personally loved.

I wasn't expecting much when I picked up this book - Gates can be uneven - and I gotta say "WOW". Very nicely written two character waltz with evil. Loads of killing - edge of your seat chase scenes - destruction - flashbacks - lots of flashbacks - bullies - nerds - blondes - old ladies - babies - gore - blood - shoot-outs - cops - repairmen - you name its there. READ THIS BOOK!

Very gruesome, but well written book. Very graphic, and not for the squeamish or new mothers, but hard to forget.

Much like a few of his previous works, this novel does a great job of portraying how a child might behave and think when faced with a horrific situation. This book is fast paced and action packed with great characters and a very scary and realistic scenerio.

I really enjoyed this horrific tale. It was vividly (almost too vividly, at times) written and with surprising depth of characters for a horror novel. The action was literally nonstop! I read it from start-to-finish in one sitting and I can't imagine being able to pause for anything! I definitely plan on reading more of this talented author's work!

I have never bothered with posting a review, however I sure use them when deciding what books to buy. So, I thought that I would give back a little. I really liked this book. I generally read to fill in gaps between doing other things. This is the first time in a long, long time that I put other things off to read this. I am sure that the plot has been outlined a dozen times, so I won't bother. Instead I will just say that this is one of Gates best, but then I have never read a book by Gates that I hated!
