Ms. Gunn definitely put her heart and soul into Nowhere to Run. From the very first sentence the reader is catapulted into the world of Cassie Lee and Solomon. With a sharp eye for detail and the ability to write beautiful imagery, she really delivers! In a time when African Americans had absolutely no rights as human beings, her characters showed the kind of strength and resilience worthy of hero worship. Yes, Nowhere to Run is romantic and sensual (for you diehard romance readers). However the author displayed the kind of depth we've come to expect from so-called 'serious' reads, the kind that top the New York Times Bestseller lists. I've seen books that make that list which truly don't live up to the honor. Nowhere to Run should have been there when it debuted. But perhaps you, the reader, can get the word out now: THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!! 'Nuff said?

ACHEIVE YOUR DREAMS UNDER YOUR OWN CONDITIONS!,
By lpeterso@fda.oc.gov (Chocolate City, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nowhere to Run (Indigo Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
The character of Cassie Lee captured me at the beginning and carried me through the entire book! Cassie Lee was a slave whose dream was to become free and rich. She was purchashed to become the wife of a powerful and rich black man. I know you're thinking..."Now, If she has all of the right ingredients, then there is no way that her dreams could not have been acheived!" WRONG! Choosing not to accept the conditions and treatment that she was given, she left with NOWHERE TO RUN! She was no longer a slave, but she was still poor. Continuing with half of her goals accomplished, she remained honest and hardworking throughout her many trials. In the end, not only did she become rich and free, she did it CASSIE LEE's way!! YOU GO GIRL!

The old west was s very important time in history and it is truly wonderful to finally see more black western love story emerging. I loved Cassie Lee and Solomon story and I hated to see the book end. Well done, and I hope to see more historically western black love stories in the future.

I saw this book in the store for the longest time. The cover kind of turned me away from it. One day I read what the book was about and thought that this would be an intresting novel and it was. This book was the bomb, Cassie Lee was such a strong heroin to me she over came many obstacles and let's not mention Solomon what a man. This wasn't your typical romance book.

I loved this book. I wanted to stand on a corner in Downtown DC and tell everyone who passed to read "Nowhere to Run".This book took me so many places visually and I experienced so many emotions. I felt that I had traveled with Cassie Lee from the Red Clay of Georgia to her "Destiny". This book will make you appreciate the struggles that AA men and women had to endure during slavery. The courage and fortitude that it took to get through each day. The grit and determination that it took to seek out their freedom. Cassie Lee is the type of woman, that we should teach our young women tody to be. She had her goal, and nothing and no one was going to take her backwards. Even with with all the hardship, abuse and loss she had endured as a slave, she still had her dreams of her "Forever Man". I admired how she was not going to settle for just man, she would rather be alone. The main male character Exum and Hawk. Both had endured much, but were strong and independent. They were not afraid of hard work. Since they had never been shown true love, were slow in realizing that the love of a good woman, makes your life complete. After reading all of Ms. Gunn's novels, I am hard pressed to choose a favorite. She is a phenomenal writer and I am so grateful that I was introduced to her.

I really enjoyed the story of Cassie Lee and Solomon Hawk, although there were scenes in the book that didn't really add anything but length to the story. If you enjoy Historical Fiction with African Americans as the lead characters you will enjoy this book. There were some very touching scenes that made me teary-eyed. A good editor could have made this novel great.

I liked the book. For me it was an okay read. Ms. Gunn's prologue kind of threw me off. It just did not flow for me, or her writing style. The time frames of the characters' lives and new chapters lack transition. I did like the characters Hawk/Solomon and Cassie Lee. This is my second book by this author. Her writing style just doesn't flow for me, though the stories are generally sound. However, it is not a bad book at all. I could only give it a strong 3 stars. I recommend that folks read other reviews and get an idea if they should read this author's works. I can't recommend it personally. But I certainly can't discourage others from reading it. Again, it is not a bad read. Something did sit well with me though. Towards the end of the book she mentioned trailblazer whose name I recognized because I am currently reading a book "Africa's Gifts to America by J.A. Jones mentioned him. So I smiled because I knew who she was talking about. Here is an excerpt concerning this Black trailblazer William Alexander Leidesdorff: In California, as was previously said, Negroes had been pioneers with the Spaniards and furnished more than half of the founders of Los Angeles. When the first trek to the West began, they came too. Delilah Beasly gives the names of hundreds of them. They were also among the Forty Niners. Some struck it rich like Gabriel Sims, Abraham Holland, James Cousins, and "Dick." They sent large sums home for the purchase of their wives and children. Foremost among the Negroes of California at this time and one of its leading personages was William Alexander Leidesdorff. Son of a white Danish planter and his Negro wife, Julia Ann Sparks, of the Virgin Island, he arrived in California in 1843 and became a Mexican citizen. He was awarded 30,000 acres of land, elected city councilman of San Francisco, and city treasurer. He was also American vice-consul, a post he owed to the fact that he favored the United States over Mexico and openly supported General Fremont and his Bear-Flag Party. He was successful in seeing the state come under American rule in 1846. Leidesdorff has three first to his credit. His ship, the Sitka, was the first steamship to enter San Francisco Bay, November 15, 1847; he established the first the first United States school there with Thomas Douglas, a Yale man, as principal; and he introduced horse-racing. The steamship caused a great sensation and was a fearsome sight to the natives who called it, "The boat with fire in its bell". All this was accomplished in only five years. |
