3.0 out of 5 stars Well!
It's weird, but fresh to me. I didn't quite understand what is this movie about. Gregg araki is one of my favorite film directors, I've been liked his movie since I saw one of his greatest movies,'Doom Generation'. 'Nowhere' is also extraordinary movie like araki's other films. But, I don't really suggest this movie to the people who are big huge fan of movie like...

here's how to tell:
1. if the reviewer says an arraki film has "bad acting" - they dont get it.
2. if the reviewer's only positive remark involves their mastabatory fantasies - they dont get it.
3. if the reviewer uses the words "shock value".. well then they prolly used the term "waistoid" too...
4. if the reviewer thinks an arraki movie is supposed to LITERALLY depict REAL teenagers then they prolly are one and havent found "freaks and geeks" yet.

i dunno. seems to ME like the themes of unrequented love, surpressed homosexual desires and an empty feeling about being in the center of our world's commercialized nothingness are interesting, relatable and beautiful things.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about "NOWHERE", October 25, 1999
This review is from: Nowhere [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have seen all of Greg Araki's movie from "The Living End", "Totally F**cked Up", "The Doom Generation", "Nowhere", and the newly released "Splenor" and "Nowhere" is the best of all!! It is the brat pack movie for the 90's. Besides "Clueless" this should be the most famous teen movie this decade. From the all star, stellar cast, to the music, to the outrageous sets and costumes. This movie has something for everyone, and the audience can relate to at least one of the characters, because not only are they loveable but they are, in a sense, real teenagers. When I first saw the film, though, I wasn't sure what to make of the fast paced, foul mouthed storyline, but the more I watch it, the more I understand and LOVE it! There are so many symbols and images beginning with each characters names such as the lead character Dark, that it makes you sit and wonder. Also I truly appreciate how every frame in that film looks like the director took a lot of time, thought, and effort into making it just right, so no time is waisted. Trust me, if you're not offended by teens telling it like it is then buy it. The cast alone is worth it. James Duval (ID4), Rachel True (The Craft), Kathleen Robertson (90201), Christina Applegate (Married w/ Children), Shannon Doherty (Charmed), Rose McGowen (Scream), Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Ryanne Phillippe (Studio 54), Heather Graham (Boogie Nights), and many, many more.....

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, February 20, 2000
This review is from: Nowhere [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is perhaps one of my favorite movies, which probably makes me slightly disturbed, but I can't help it. The movie, while really dark and very disturbing, is a pinpoint portrait of the disillusionment of teenage life. Shot through the eyes of Dark, it tells the stories of different teens and their search for love. Of coarse, since this is the 90s, the search many times leads to S&M, Homosexualality, heroin usage, and others that I don't want to give away. Of coarse, this is only what I THINK it's about, since the movie doesn't follow a clear plot line. It's extrememly artsy, very trippy, and has awesome directing, cinemetogrophy, and acting. VERY VERY WORTH IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trippy 90s Journey, January 28, 2010

This astounding Gregg Araki film includes eating chocolate out of a vagina in a car overlooking the lights of LA, nipple-rings being bitten off, bulimic teenage girls scarfing ice cream, an adorable free-loving bisexual, an epic kick the can game involving an alien abduction, two suicides, valley girls that get evaporate by a reptilian-alien, muscular drag-queens in a jeep, fruit-loops eaten out of a hexagon-shaped bowl, murder by an angry guy who got bad blow (weapon of choice: soup can), tweens in love, twins who have extra intense orgasms when they have sex simultaneously, video camera journaling and the deepest darkest eyes you could fall in forever. Any film that starts with a steam and soap filled masturbation shower scene interrupted by an a bitter mother has fantastic potential-- Nowhere lives up to everything you would hope it to be. This is one of my all-time favorite films.

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie will stay with you for a long time, August 10, 2004
This review is from: Nowhere [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this movie on video years ago when it was new. I watched it with friends and we watched it twice in one night. Its just one of those movies you have to watch over and over again to even begin to appreciate.
There are so many people in this movie Rose McGowan, Debi Mazzar a very young Mena Suvari, if you blink you might miss them all.
This movie is not for everyone you will either love it or hate it but you will have strong feelings for it either way. Theres a lot of sex, drugs and uncomfortable scenes. But you will remember this movie.
This also is one of the best soundtracks you could ever own. Im lucky enough to have it and Im so glad I bought it. Its been one of my favorite cd's for the past 5 years.
You should see this movie, whether or not youll like it is all depending on the type of life you lead and where your head is at when you watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I see close to a thousand movies a year, this is a favorite, October 28, 1998

This review is from: Nowhere [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Nowhere is about a bunch of angst-ridden teens living in a surreal otherworldly version of LA. Even though most of the people in this movie are living doomy-gloomy lives, it is not a depressing flic. It is chock full of sex, violence, drugs, and rock n'roll. Nowhere is an amazing piece of eye candy with mtv style sets, and a matching feel to it w/out being really choppy like an actual video or like the movie Armageden(sp?) Cameo appearances include Shannon Daugherty, Traci Lords, Rose Mcgowen (Marilyn Manson's girlfriend), that Aussie guy from Baywatch, John Ritter, Christina Applegate, and a couple of the Brady kids. This is not a cheesy piece of crap!!! Every little bit of this movie is filled with awesome sounds, pictures, and situations (even though at times extreme and shocking). !!Not for small children or old people!! !!Nowhere should be watched by cool teens and adults (the kind that have been raised on mtv and video games)!! !!If you fall into the good category, don't watch it with your parents, because they won't understand and you will get into a fight with them when they make you turn it off!! END

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD Format PLEASE, January 30, 2011
This review is from: Nowhere (DVD)
If you are a Gen Xer then you will get this movie, if not, then don't bother and move on...that being said, it sucks because I think most of the stars of this movie would love for it to be buried away and forgotten. However, it is a gem. It is what we Gen X'ers were all about. The movie makes no sense, yet is perfect and unforgetable, especially to those who lived it...please publish in DVD format. Sadly, as much as I hate to admit it...since I have assimilated and become a functioning adult I would hate to think this little piece of American folk culture could just disappear!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Very happy to find this rare dvd!!, November 27, 2009

Being a huge fan of Gregg Araki's films, "Nowhere" was the ONE film that I have struggled through the years to find. FINALLY, thanks to Amazon.com, I found it and has completed my collection!! Though it's an Australian import, I have a region-free dvd player, so ZERO problems with viewing this wonderful film.
For those who love "underground" films, this is a "must-see".
Very happy with the shipment. It arrived WAY earlier than expected and was sealed and completely brand new, which I loved.
Wish I could give this TEN stars!!
Thanks for providing this. You'll never know how grateful that I am for this.
(Think I might watch it again, now, after talking about it. LOL)

This is an amazing movie by Gregg Araki and has to be my favorite movie ever. If debating whether or not to buy this movie, don't listen to any bad reviews because this is a true classic for limitless reasons. And! The soundtrack is just as amazing as the movie. However, I will admit it is not for everyone. Another great movie by this director: Doom Generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This film begins Akari's teen angst triology, March 31, 2006
Please ignore the other review as it pertains to the lack of U.S. distribution and not the movie itself. (although he does have a point over the trouble finding certain movies distributed here in the U.S - I had to go to London to get my copy and I thought we were into all the free press? go figure) This movie is a great intro to Gregg Akari filmology. This is the most tame of the triology (Totally F****ed Up and Doom Generation) and if this one offends or is not to your taste.....no need to continue. However, if a dark yet seemingly real look at teen angst for those kids usually ignored sounds interesting, then this is the movie for you. Just be prepared for language, sex and drugs because where would teenagers be without all that? Issues of sexual orientation, parents, and 'I'll die without you' type of love is real to these kids on the fringe and you feel it in this film. It oozes to pours out of every frame. This first movie finds our young hero somewhat of a romantic and idealist and by the time we watch the last film (Doom Generation) we are amazed at the character's transformation but we understand as we saw his development through Totally F***ed Up. All three movies really have to be watched to appreciate Gregg Akari's genuis. Personally, I saw Doom Generation first and then Nowhere and it didn't ruin the flow so order is not mandatory to get 'it'. Also, I loved the quirky character cameos from John Ritter, Tracey Lords and others. Watch for them and laugh. Well done and I recommend this little masterpiece to those who enjoy truly independent film making.
