Nu Bossa - Not the Same as the Old Bossa :-), February 24, 2006
This review is from: Nu Bossa Cafe (Audio CD)
This is a fine collection of Nu Bossa/Latin Tinged Trip Hop or Bossa Trip Hop Acid Jazz - just don't confuse it with the Bossa Nova most people know so well. And yes, there are only 12 tracks.

The Real Thing, September 22, 2004
This is the same as the other "Nu Bossa Cafe", only this one right here has the correct track listing while the other one's is incorrect, loading it up with some tracks from the real thing to tunes taken off of Brazilectro, Bossa Tres... Jazz and a few others. Just looking at the tracks and copyright, it's easy to see that this compilation is like a perfect companion piece to Rainer Truby's Glucklich series. Specifically, this would've gone hand in hand with Glucklich vol 5 as there was only one overlapping song - Comanche - but the one on Nu-Bossa Cafe is a cute remake by Precyz while the one on Glucklich V is Jorge Ben's. Meanwhile you can find Elysian Fields by Minus 8 on Glucklich 4. Quite a few compost artists featured - a Jazzanova remix, A Forest Mighty Black and even Fauna Flash among others that the label consistently works with - like Tim Hutton and Victor Davies. The strength of the songs are great too; Toda Tersafeira's a bit of an older remix but still has the perfect Jazzanova rework with a loop in it that hooks. And although the cut didn't grab me at first, there's something simple about the beats and guitar in Precyz's remake to Jorge Ben's classic (which is actually featured on Glucklich 5) Commanche that I like. Finally, Vooga Vonge is a very cool track... bringing back some of that samba soul laid over a cool compost sounding percussion beat. I like Suba's remake to Felicidade but Juryman takes the vocals and beat to a new level. Finally, the CD caps off with Dr Drak's nightlife inspired Brazylou. I definitely recommend this CD, and forgive me for drawing the constant comparisons to the Glucklich series! It's just that there is a dominant Compost flavor to this cd and the vibe is eerily similar to that of Glucklich 5. So of course if you pick this 12 track cd up, check out the Glucklich series, Brazilectro III and Faze Action's Pure Braziliance.

Good Tunes But Check the Track Listing, May 15, 2004
This review is from: Nu Bossa Cafe (Audio CD)
I dig this release but do NOT go by the track listing with this release. This is actually a 12 track cd which features the artists in the Amazon mini-review that's below the track listing. If not for another site where I first saw this CD, I would have been upset. Here is the real track listing and order: Victor Davies: Better Place (Afro Gigolo Mix) Soul Quality Quartet: Toda Tersafeira (Jazzanova Rework) A Forest Mighty Black: Sunday City Sequence New Sector Movements: Vooga Vonge Rollercone: Me Gusta Tim Hutton: Colours (Freformfivemix) Suba: Felicidade (Juryman Mix) Minus 8: Elysian Fields Fauna Flash: Tel Aviv Precyz: Commanche Soul Drummers: Space and Time Dr Drak: Brazylou This is a pretty good compilation of nu-bossa tunes, breaks and beats by mostly European DJ's and producers. This has a VERY heavy Compost Records feel. Original acts from Compost feature Fauna Flash, A Forest Mighty Black (Rainer Truby/Fauna Flash) and Minus 8 along with a Jazzanova remix. The Compost cuts are probably the highlight - Jazzanova's rare remake of Soul Quality's Quartet's track is great. There's also a remake to Jorge Ben's classic "Camanche" really grew on me - especially the intro. It won't make you forget the original, but it's got its own, unique charm. Tim Hutton and Victor Davies also appear and a cool & sexy remix to a Suba track is present, along with a few other cool cuts.
I HIGHLY recommend this. Especially if you're a fan of Rainer Truby's "Glucklich" compilation series. This could almsot be a companion piece to "Glucklich V", as they were both released in the same year and have a VERY similar vibe. The track selection is consistent and the tunes are quality. Pick it up! And of course if you enjoy it, check out: the Glucklich series, Faze Action's "Pure Braziliance", Jazzanova's remixes 1997-2000, Suba and The Bossa Tres... Jazz (Bossa Mundo) series.
