5.0 out of 5 stars Effective and 2 for the price of one
These things are very effective at making a slightly tight pair of shoes more comfortable. The fact that this item comes as two stretchers rather than only one makes it a very practical buy. Put them in a pair of shoes and leave them overnight or for a week and when you wear those shoes again, they could be a quarter size larger, depending on the type and construction of...

1.0 out of 5 stars Designed to fail
Using a plastic wing-nut on a metal threaded shaft to drive the mechanism to "stretch" the width of the shoe is a guarantee of eventual failure. The plastic wing-nut can be replaced with an 8 mm metal wing-nut for about 70 cents each. Screw it onto the shaft "backwards" for the best function. While replacing the wing-nut, consider using a larger washer, too. I expect...

While replacing the wing-nut, consider using a larger washer, too. I expect that the plastic piece at the end of the threaded rod will eventually fail, but I know of no easily available hardware that might work. For about $2 this product could be greatly improved, but as it is, it was designed to fail.

I'm very happy with mine and have used them on at least 3 different pairs of shoes. Good for taking a pair of shoes I used to have to wear only thin socks with into shoes I can now wear thicker socks with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Like a charm, September 15, 2009

Worked like they were suppose to. Put them in my shoes that were uncomfortably tight on my feet for about 4 or 5 days. Now I can wear the shoes with room to spare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job right, April 23, 2009

After stretching with this shoe stretcher, two pairs of shoes that had previously been uncomfortably tight over my bunions are now as comfortable as old slippers. This product does the job, and saves money too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine failed too, December 21, 2011

I purchased this back in 2009 (it's now 21 December 2011). I'd loan it to a friend who misplaced it for a long time (maybe a year or so). When I did get it back and I started to use it this year 2011. It worked fine enough for about two pairs of shoes, and then I realize I'm turning the metal to stretch the width of the shoes and it's not moving. That's when I realize that the top section to actually widen the shoe was plastic and it came off the metal turning rod. When I turn the rod the other way (i.e. original rest position), the plastic head was stuck in the wood. I had to get something to move it. I gave this review 3-stars because it worked for a while and it still works to stretch the length of the shoe. I would not buy this kind with the plastic head again.

I've always had problems getting shoes that fit. I find Sperry top-siders, or billfish are usally comfortable, but with so much production going to China, attention to sizing is questionable. I have used these shoe trees and they worked well. Make the shoe a little wet, and apply pressure with the tool. Add additional pressure, but not to the point to dammage the tool ( it is not the best quality construction) and leave them expanded for several days, perhaps a week. Sometimes adding additional tension during this time is good. Do not forget to use the little plastic toe pieces to get the best custom fit.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for., January 30, 2010

Great idea, questionable execution.

The width adjustment does not work on one of these.

The other works fine.

I was able to use this two or three times, but I also had a problem with the metal bar coming out of the plastic pointer between the wooden pieces. I put the plastic piece back on, & the metal screw part went right through it.

I purchased this set because it came with two stretchers and because the reviews didn't mention anything about them breaking easily. However, as with other brands of shoe stretchers, one of these broke it the first use. The metal bar comes out of the plastic pointer between the wooden pieces. It's the plastic pointer that separates the wooden pieces as you twist the metal bar at the end. When you try to untwist the metal bar to bring the wooden pieces back together, the metal bar comes right out of the plastic pointer. I tried to super glue the bar back into the plastic part, but I don't know how long that will work. One other thing to note: I used the stretchers on a pair of patent leather sandals. They barely stretched at all, and not enough to make them comfortable. I think the patent leather finish must not stretch as much as regular leather would. I'm quite sure that the stretchers would work on a different pair of shoes, though.

This product works. However one stop stretching as far out as the other one. But for the cost compared to other ones for sale, they were worth purchasing even if I have to purchase another pair.
