Doug is a fantastic player. I own this CD as well as both his instructional DVDs. The density of material in the DVDs is amazing, and I got hold of those after I picked up a copy of Nu Instrumental (this CD). One reviewer didn't think the songs on this CD were good. What!? I think they are great. There is some hugely melodic playing here as well as the shreddination you are looking for. I liked more songs on this CD than the typical CD that I buy for sure. I still can't believe the integrity of Doug's technique and the raw feeling the lines are delivered with. Wow.
Doug is a massive talent, and one hell of a nice guy as well (he really treats his fans with the adoration and respect they deserve). It's nice to see good guys making an honest go of it in the biz. I'll be following Doug's career, he's on my short list of guys that I buy anything they put out without hearing it first (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steve Lukather, Neil Schon, a handful of others are on that list).

I have long been a fan of instrumental guitar rock, and this is exactly that, of the first order. Others have mentioned the Satriani influence which is unmistakable, but this surpasses some of Satch's own material. It ranks very near Surfing With The Alien, which, IMO is the best Satriani release. It may not be as heavy as some would like but to me is just right. A good listen and not redundant as some of these types of disc can be. One reviewer said you can categorize these type of albums into 2 basic categories, Malmsteen influenced, and Satriani influenced and he was dead on. If you are a fan of the later you will not be disappointed in this one, so add it to your collection, you'll be glad you did.

Pretty Good - Very Similiar To Satch,

I've been listening to this cd as background music for a few days now and have to confess its not bad for this type of thing.
I've grown up with this stuff since 1990 when I first heard Passion & Warfare, and grew up with a lot of the Varney / Shrapnel cd's of that era. And with the exception of a few artists most of these cd's fall into one of two categories - The Malmsteen influenced stuff, or The Satriani influenced stuff. Fortunately this cd falls into the later category and features 11 instrumentals in the 4 or 5 minute category. Style wise, melody takes precedent over shred, and the slightly space age guitar tone reminds me of Satch a few years ago. Fans of Satriani / Balducci etc. should find this all pretty comfortable listening. Personally I do think the 'nu' part of the title is misleading - I was expecting a lot of detuned Korn / Linkin Park type riffs, but although heavyish in parts its not really what I'd describe as Nu Metal. John 5 was certainly heavier on his cds. One thing I personally like on this cd is the fact that most of the songs are pretty interchangeable with roughly similar tempos, guitar tones, song lengths etc. rather than some of these albums which seem to be try and show of the artists versality (eg. a few rockers, a blues song, a classical piece, a shred song, a weird one etc.). I prefer to have one style of music explored in its entirety, and for that i'm grateful that this cd doesn't come across as some ego trip, but rather a set of well crafted coherent songs. Worthy of spending a few dollars on at the very least if you're into this stuff.
