Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

For a man who puts his trust in God, Kirk Franklin certainly seems defensive on the opening "interlude" of Nu Nation Project, which depicts criticism of his controversial hip-hop-tinged gospel as a court trial complete with urgent reporters outside the courthouse. The message, fortunately, quickly moves from Franklin's own problems to those of the world--which, notably, the star refuses to ignore while praising Jesus' name. Whether the Almighty is really impressed by the It's Showtime at the Apollo!-ready oversinging and clichéd R&B production is another question, but if you are, The Nu Nation Project is another helping of what's made Franklin a platinum seller. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album, March 24, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nu Nation Project (Audio CD)
Kirk Franklin is one of the most influencial artists in gospel and contemporary christian music and is probably the most influncial artist of the late 90's/ early 00's. He infuses R&B, funk, traditional gospel, hip hop, and pop music in truly innovative way. He has been criticized and judged for being revolutionary, for not keeping God in a religious box. This album is the best response to this critics, he brings forth and album bringing traditional gospel artists (Donnie McClurkin, God's Property and Fred Hammond) with contemporary christian artists (Crystal Lewis) and Pop and R&B artists (Bono of U2, Mary J. Blige, and R. Kelly)for a truly revolutionary album. He blends old and new and never loses his sense of humor or lowers his standards. If more gospel music sounded like this, more people of all ethnic groups would listen to it. He brings gospel music to non-religious people. His next album is more humble but none of his albums are better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kirk Franklin and the Nu Nation, November 29, 2004
By
Mikeisha Best (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nu Nation Project (Audio CD)
Kirk Franklin is a musical genius. No one has ever done what he has done: This man has mixed gospel music with hip-hop and r&b and made it sound oh so good. He created a way for the younger generation to be able to enjoy gospel music in an effort to get something from it. I just want to give him his credit, because his credit is due!

The Nu Nation Project is a really nice album. A lot of people would argue that it is way too secular, but people have always said that about Kirk Franklin. This album has it's slow songs as well as the up tempo songs. The hip hop and r&b influences are heavily included, but they sound great.

"Revolution" was the album's first release. I love the way this song begins, with Kirk reciting a Bible scripture. I think this songs production was a bit corny, but the message is very relevant: changing the world. It is a fast tempo song and received heavy airplay. "Lean on Me" was also released and received heavy airplay. It features appearances by R. Kelly, Bono, and Mary J. Blige. This song is a ballad which says if you need a shoulder to lean on, you can lean on me. This song gets hard to listen to sometimes, but it's a really good song. One of the album's highlights is "Riverside". This song has good production and great lyrics. The choir is great in this song. It speaks of meeting Jesus by the riverside. "Hold Me Now" and "You Are" are simply beautiful. They are both slower songs and they are very easy to like. I can almost guarantee that potential buyers are not going to like every song on this CD, but it is definitely worth the $. I wouldn't consider any song on this CD a filler. Kirk obviously put a lot of time in this album and it shows. GREAT JOB KIRK!

When this cd first came out, I was all over it! The Lord moved through Kirk on this one. Lean on Me was a big hit, both gospel and secular, but it is definitely not the best song on the album.
