I received the Icon-2 as a Christmas present and I couldn't be happier. It serves 3 different purposes very well. As a desktop amplifier, it powers most fairly efficient bookshelves to decent db levels with clarity and punch. I have it powering a pair of Triangle Comete bookshelf speakers and the little Icon makes them sing. It really is amazing how such a tiny little thing can create so much power! The DAC sounds incredible - from mp3's to high resolution flac files, everything just sounds clearer, punchier, and more dynamic. Also, the headphone amplifier does an impressive job with my Sennheiser hd600. If this device cost 500 bucks, I'd still be amazed at the performance. That it does all this for 350 is just downright mind boggling.

When I got my Icon-2, the AC Adaptor was faulty. Ugh. Buying from a small company through Amazon.com is not when you want a problem like this. But, I emailed Nuforce and they decided instantly to ship me a whole new Icon 2, no questions asked. GREAT responsiveness.

I just got the second one and it is AWESOME. I ran some old Santana songs that were loaded onto iTunes from a CD many years ago through the Icon-2. The difference is immediate. Songs that sounded like one lead singer when I ran my iPod directly into my living room speakers are now clearly a very tight two-part harmony listening through the Icon-2.

Nuances like that which I have not heard in years are delighting me with every song.

I've been tweaking the darn equalizer inside the iPod trying to get decent sound for years. I just turned off the EQ and don't expect to ever need to use it again.

You do not need to be an audiophile or a musician with perfect pitch to hear the difference. Anybody who loves to really listen when they listen to music is going to hear the difference right away.

I bought this based on a few internet reviews. I bought it to convert iTunes files done in lossless format into a small room system with NHT3 speakers from an iMac (and as a driver for an old set of Stax headphones). I was so happy with them as the driver for my computer system I just left it there and I will have to buy another one for the Stax. It is clean, very quiet, barely warm and can drive these speakers to medium volumes. It sounds neutral to me and you can fiddle with the equalizer in iTunes anyway if desired. And the amazing thing for me, really, is how it does so with such a small footprint. It must be very efficient. Be warned, it will not get party level loud.

Originally, I bought one of these for work so I could switch between audio form my computer and my iPhone. I was so happy with the audio quality I ended up getting a second one for my iMac at home. I used the USB to hook it up and let the Icon 2 do the decoding. The computer recognized it by name and after a few simple setting changes in the system preferences and midi setup I had 96/24 up and running. I also like that I could mix and match the speakers I wanted. The system is driving some small monitors and I also have a sub hooked up to the line out. Most computer speaker systems don't give you theses options. And I didn't want a big amp hooked up to my computer. This little amp takes up so little room and looks great on my desk.

At work it is hooked up to a set of Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks and they've never sounded better. Plus it provides easy access to a headphone jack which is not accessible with my computer under the desk.

It is pricy, but the design is craftsmanship are exceptional. From the seamless aluminum enclosure to the feel of the knobs as you turn them. I didn't even know this type of device existed and now I wouldn't want to go without.

I did a bunch of research before settling on the Icon2. I had a set of leftover bookshelf speakers which I wanted to put in my office at work and needed a small desktop amp to do it.

I did some digging online to look at small, "audiophile" desktop amplifiers and came up with a few contenders. The leaders ended up being the Virtue Audio ONE and the NuForce Icon (gen 1). Most reviewers seemed to agree that the Virtue had the best sound on the market, but the Icon came in a close second and had some additional goodies packed in - specifically an onboard DAC. Since my primary source was going to be my laptop this was a pretty big win (I didn't really want to buy an additional DAC).

I've had the unit for a little over a week now and I LOVE it. Would (and have) recommended it to friends. Works great with both speakers and headphones and sounds amazing.

My only complaint (if I had to have one) would be that it didn't come with CAT5 -> bare wire cables, but I used the pin diagram on NuForce's site and made my own.
