The description indicates this unit is an easy install for older pre-wired homes. That is what drew my attention. The installation was a snap. The buttons lit up and functioned without a hitch. No batteries needed. If you need a transformer or a new button, include them in the order to save shipping costs. When you install any new electronic part, tag the wires or make a drawing when removing the old part so you won't get confused.

Update:
I neglected to say that this model is an exact replacement for the bell that failed in my home. Externally, the cover is different, but internally the mechanism is identical. The bell is machanical. It uses "hammers" to ring two-tone tubular bells. It is not a recording. One tone for the back door and both tones for the front door. There are only three electrical connections. Transformer (one pole), Front door (one pole), and Back Door (one pole). It is a very simple unit.

We replaced our homes original 1964 doorbell not because it stopped working, but because the cover was so ugly stained we wanted an update. The one we replaced it with lasted a couple of years before it started getting stuck, with a constant hum instead of the doorbell. Really all I needed was the black plastic piece with doorbell that sits under the cover, and I felt like I was doomed that they were all going to be the same base, from every manufacturer, cheaply made in China with the same getting stuck issue.

The base on this NuTone doorbell is different from the last one I had. It fits perfectly and I did not need to upgrade any wiring or add anything, it just worked.

I like this doorbell. It is clear, not tinny, and doesn't last forever. It can be heard throughout our ranch home easily. I would not want it louder than this, I find it annoying and jarring. Usually I know when people are coming to my home. The only people that ever ring the doorbell other than someone I didn't meet at the door quickly enough are people I didn't invite. The UPS man doesn't even need to ring though he does.

I will try to upload a picture of the base in case that is a help to anyone.

My friend was being driven crazy by an electronic door chime that sounded terrible; long, loud, and fake. As a housewarming gift, I got this for her and installed it and she loves it. Ding dong for the front door. (It will do just one if it was hooked to a back door if you wish.) There are little steel xylophone-like bars inside and a metal rod on a spring that is actuated by an electromagnet to hit them. A well proven concept! The outside is clean and rather modern. Good there isn't any more texture, since it is almost too textured, but when up high it works fine. Recommended!

Great simple doorbell. I looked at hundreds of doorbells online (really!) before selecting this one, and I'm super happy with it. No fancy bells & whistles, just simple & effective (and cheap)!

The chime isn't loud enough. I'm too lazy to replace it, but would not buy another one. Even my dogs don't bark when they hear it.

Not quite what I expected. While it looks ok and was fairly easy to install, the sound is a bit tinny.

It's nice to see that some products don't degrade over time. I've been using this chime for 30 years and it still works great.

Pretty basic chime, replaced a 30-year-old one during a gut rehab. Not much to say about this one - I had the electrician redoing all the wiring, so had him run new bellwire and replace the chime unit. You can get all these wireless chimes these days, but I figured the wired chime works pretty well as a technology, and I'd rather save the wireless bandwidth in my house for stuff that really needs it (which pretty soon will be just about everything).

The backdoor chime wasn't working on my 40+ year-old NuTone LB-12. I'd tried fixing it by oiling the plunger before seeing the "do not oil" warning in big block letters. Oh well.

This new unit is the exact same size as the old LB-12; even the screw holes lined up.

A perfect replacement unit, despite the new part number.
