Just replaced a ceiling light with this fan/light combo. Selected this model since it is designed for a fluorescent light (13W, 4-post) not included). I had adequate attic space which is needed for an existing location, where the housing must attached to a ceiling joist with screws (not included). The housing needs a clamp connector for a standard 3/8" (1/2" KO). I used NuTone's (Broan) Wall Ducting Kit to keep it simple (note: it only has 5 feet of 4" flex duct).
Directions lack the details for a DIY'er, so it took me most of a day to convert and install. But, it was worth it...great fan and light operation. Installation requires a 9 1/8-inch square cut in the ceiling right next to the ceiling joist. I used two #10 x 5/8", and two #10 x 3/4", pan head phillips-head screws to attach the housing, and the existing single wire for electric - so fan and light operate at the same time (you can have dual operation if different wiring is used). The noise level is 3 sones, which is about mid-way between quiet and loud, acceptable for our locations. Fan works well taking out shower steam and moisture. I am very please with this model. I've got another one on order to install in the other bathroom. Update 9/26/2010: Just installed the second one...a little more involved since I had to bring electrical wiring to the location. Learned a lot from the first one and installation went well. This is a fine fan/light combo which does a great job and looks nice on the ceiling. Highly recommend.

We had this fan for about a year and it became very loud, like the fan or motor was going. So we took it back to HD and they gladly replaced it free of charge with the same model. The next one eventually did the same thing. They are just load and rough. Sounds bad enough that I cringe to run it.

Holy gerbil. My brother's house came with this type of fan in all 5 of his bathroom. Turn one on and it sounded like a freaking lawn mower. Took it off, and found the design to be extremely simple. None existent noise suppression anywhere. The motor assembly is loud and unbalanced. And once installed into the housing, the vibration it caused combined with the housing make it even louder.
If you have attic access, I would not recommend this one. Buy a Panasonic. |
