4.0 out of 5 stars Warm and beautiful music, December 4, 2003
This review is from: Nublu Sessions (Audio CD)
This is the perfect CD to turn down the lights, light up a candle or two, and just chill out! It has a wonderful mix of warm earthy vocals (Norah Jones's two tracks here are especially stand out, as well as excellent work by the resident vocalist, Maria Turner) with live jazz instruments and chilled laid back beats. The music envelopes you in a warm wash of sound and doesn't let go until the last track.

5.0 out of 5 stars POETRY IN MOTION!!!, March 3, 2004
This review is from: Nublu Sessions (Audio CD)
Wax Poetic's "Nublu Sessions" is every bit hypnotic and sensual as it is danceable and profound. With guest appearances from the likes of N'Dea Davenport to former band member, Norah Jones, Wax Poetic has weaved an intricate web of neo-jazz, chill-out, microhouse, folk, reggae and soulful music sure to please. Every song is well-produced with layers of texture and delightful rhythms. A+

5.0 out of 5 stars Wax Poetic, January 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nublu Sessions (Audio CD)
Nublu Sessions is a great sounding record fusing jazz with electronic and worldbeat flavors. Norah Jones' two songs that appear on Nublu Sessions were ones she regularly sang with Wax Poetic while she was in the group. Wax Poetic is a revolving door of talent with contributions from U-Roy, Saul Williams, N'Dea Davenport and others. The vibe of this CD will defintely help you to chill out - without putting you to sleep :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic downtempo - a little something for everyone, December 17, 2005
By
This review is from: Nublu Sessions (Audio CD)
I just fairly recently bought this CD and have been pretty impressed. I bought it primarily due to Norah Jones' contributions. I love Norah, her voice is heaven, but have found her highly acclaimed (and deservedly so) solo work to be just ever so slighly too soulful-jazzy-bluesy for my taste - I love her solo work, to be sure, just not as much as I love her in this genre. While her recent work is beautiful indeed, I really like her voice when it is married with downtempo electronica such as with Wax Poetic or on the song "New York City" on the 2005 dance/electronica compilation CD "Top Shelf Dance - Volume 1" (check it out, it's fantastic).

Really, though, the primary reason to buy this album is for the song "Angels" - Norah's voice floating above the beautiful ethereal music is intense bliss. It takes a minute for her vocals to kick in, and the song is certainly not lyrically dense, but the overall effect is absolute heaven.

There are other winners here - "Tell Me" (Norah's other vocal performance on this album), "Girl", "Homme" (love the Brazilian Girls!), and "Sea Grass". There are some other good tracks as well, in addition to these, just not as good and somewhat hit or miss for me. Still, all in all, very solid album. I recommend it without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, sexy, sophisticated., June 21, 2005

Creative and imaginative, with a real art to the compositions, mixing and musicianship. So few recordings deserve the sort of respect that comes with straight five-star ratings, in this case practically across the boards. Delicious, sexy, sophisticated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat downtempo, July 22, 2004

Anyone who's a fan of jazz-based music and electronica is sure to love this album. I happened upon them by chance when they opened for another band. Intrigued, I later bought their self-titled debut when I saw it in a store. Nublu Sessions has some tracks off that release, as well as all-new tracks. Nublu touches on a variety of styles, genres, vocals and tempos. It would be hard to be disappointed with this album. I also recommend getting their first album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great car music!, January 15, 2011

Very groovy internationally flavoured music that skirts the edges of eroticism and eclecticism.

I could only find two tracks From this cd on iTunes, which I bought, but wanted the rest even without hearing them first. Though there are a few tracks I decided not to add to my library I totally love it!
It's good 'think' music, I'd love the chance to jam with these guys.
I've also checked out some other artists connected with Wax Poetic and have also bought their music in turn, namely Ilan and Nil and I've also found some other great, similarly themed music by cross referencing other artists such as 123, Brazilian Girls and Dilara Sakpinar (sp? Srry!).

Looking forward to my next Wax Poetic purchase! (already bought all your other stuff on iTunes...)

4.0 out of 5 stars An otherwise great album marred by bass distortion, August 6, 2010

The music is great - I agree with everyone else here on that. It's excellent, in fact. My favorite tracks are "Girl", the intro to "Angels", "Homme", and "Time" - Saul Williams in particular is amazing.

The sound quality of the album has one fatal flaw though - all the heavy bass notes on the album have distortion induced on them in the recording. I don't know why the engineer did it, but even on a pair of $4000 Infinity Renaissance 90 speakers it sounds like the bass is coming from a cheap pair of Cerwin Vegas with floppy 15" woofers. Other than that, the sound quality is very good. The dynamic range is excellent and the level of detail is very high - better than the vast majority of recordings today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great One, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Nublu Sessions (Audio CD)
Dave Shantz hit it. While I agree w zengrrl about Norah, it is only one track, and definitely *not* the main reason to buy the album, the whole thing is.
