Editorial Reviews

Review

“These miniature guides are packed to the margins with important facts and enlightening commentary.” -- Publishers Weekly

From the Publisher

Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are brief, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. In addition to an introduction to the subject, each topic is individually analyzed and reviewed, examining its impact on culture or history. There is also a reference section that lists related web sites and weightier (and more expensive) books on the subject. For media buffs, students, and inquiring minds, these are great entry–level books that build into an essential library.

Format: Paperback
The author of this book must be commended for his diligence in covering so many topics related to the age of nuclear deterrence in such a concise volume. Apocalyptic fiction has been a staple of literature and film since the conclusion of World War II, but the social implications of mutually assured destruction are now an issue of historical importance and this book does a good job at summarising the scale, the ramifications and ultimately the horror that nuclear warfare could potentially have brought about on a global scale. Whether you grew up with "Dr Strangelove" in the sixties or "WarGames" in the eighties, this book will bring back memories (and quite possibly nightmares) of the threat of nuclear conflict. It may be a sobering read at times, but it's undoubtedly a worthwhile one.
