Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up A well-known writer on various environmental problems projects the physical and technological effects of nuclear war in an objective, authoritative manner. Beginning with a brief account of nuclear weapons development, the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings and the arms race, Pringle describes the effect of a one-megaton explosion on Detroit; reports on studies of "limited" nuclear warfare and large-scale war and reviews the prospect of "nuclear winter." Vocabulary and style are accessible to junior high students. The black-and-white photos and diagrams are well-keyed to the text, and captions are informative. This is excellent material for school reports and debate preparation. However, there is almost no discussion of the political aspects of the arms race and the resistance to it. By concentrating on scientific/military problems, Pringle appears to give little hope to those who would like to end them. For this aspect of the issue, see Ann E. Weiss' The Nuclear Arms Race: Can We Survive It? (Houghton, 1983), which describes political activity by citizens to end the arms race. These two books should be used together for a complete picture of the situation. Jonathan R. Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library, Lynnwood, Wash.
