Amazing Melodies, Mature Lyrics, and 3 Talented Young Men, October 26, 2008
Nuclear Winter is a rock opera containing enchanting piano melodies, amazing guitar riffs, and outstanding drumming...about the end of the world. These three young men - John (guitar/piano/vocals), Eric (bass) and Bradyn (drums) - sound like season veterans of the music world, but when this album was released (if I'm not mistaken), two of the three of them weren't even old enough to drink! The lyrics are politically and emotionally driven, but I have to admit what first drew me to them was the sound. Piano is something that you are hearing appear more and more in rock albums, but piano that is well done, intelligently written, and effortlessly flows in a way that, halfway though a song you realize that this IS a rock band, and that IS a piano, is something very rare. The same with the lyrics. Intelligently written, moving lyrics are few and far between in today's musical world, and these boys do a fantastic job of sounding musically inclined and intelligent while not sounding pompous or like they are trying to hard.
Words cannot describe how much this band continues to amaze me. If you like this album, or are in the least intrigued by it, I urge you to find someplace to pick up the other 3 (Yossarian [John van Deusen solo album], John van Deusen and the Lonely Forest, and Regicide), and I STRONGLY urge you to pick up their next album, We Sing the Body Electric! in February.
Having met these guys personally, I believe that they will do great, amazing things, in the music world and elsewhere. Support local music (no matter where you are from!)!!!
