About the Author

Dietmar Tietz, a native from Germany and a US permanent resident, authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications, and is the editor of the Nucleic Acid Electrophoresis lab manual which was recently published by Springer Verlag. His scientific contributions also include review articles, book chapters, articles for the general public, several presentations at national and international conferences and well-known institutions. E.g., he was invited by Nobel laureate Prof. Manfred Eigen to give a lecture at the tea seminar (Max-Planck-Institute, Goettingen).

Dr. Tietz received his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg (Germany), where he was also employed as a University Lecturer to assume duties of full and associate professors on sabbatical leave and to conduct scientific research (structural analysis of hormone metabolites).

In 1983 he came to the United States and worked for almost 10 years as Senior Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After joining the Section on Macromolecular Analysis, he

(1) developed innovative non-denaturing electrophoretic techniques for studying viruses, conjugated vaccines and other subcellular-sized particles,

(2) conducted studies in mathematical modeling and computer simulation that allowed for a better interpretation of experimental results derived from electrophoresis of proteins, DNA, viruses and vaccines,

(3) supervised and participated in the development of user-friendly scientific computer programs ElphoFit and GelFit (Macintosh) that incorporate innovative and sophisticated computer modeling and image processing tools to automate and simplify the use of complex procedures and to make them available for routine analysis.

Dr. Tietz continued his studies for two years as an Entrepreneur Scientist at the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen (Germany) - a project sponsored by the German National Science Foundation (DFG).

Since 1996, he is consulting for NASA and Raytheon Systems Company. He coordinates Web and software engineering efforts in the field of science and communications within a core project related to NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (former Mission to Planet Earth).
