Editorial Reviews

The sexual revolution left us with unforgettable moments, a never-before dreamed of happiness, and an endless feeling of pleasure. The concerts were authentic exaltations of uncontrolled happiness, collective madness and a truly therapeutic release. LA CASA AZUL's newest work is a gift for fans, a small souvenir that closes the magical era. LA CASA AZUL's new journey is still full of fantasy a fantasy that begins in their new video, La Nueva Yma Sumac, an incredible piece by the great master Duprez (responsible also for the album design) and a team made up of true fans of the group. It is an ambitious project that makes this video unique and unprecedented in the history of music videos and animation in our country, and that will undoubtedly be talked about outside of our borders as well.

This 2009 album, whose title translates to, roughly, "The new Yma Sumac (who gave us the revolution)" [Yma Sumac is the name of a famous Peruvian soprano from the 50s] is a companion of sorts to La Casa Azul's 2007 album, La Revolución Sexual (translate that yourself). It remakes a couple of the previous album's singles in different languages and arrangements, adds a few so-so covers, but finishes with killer live versions of Casa Azul favorites old and new.

1. La Nueva Yma Sumac - this identical track appeared on the last album. It starts off with some chiptune (8-bit video game music) and quickly transitions to the classic La Casa Azul sound: rock, brass synths, and a grab bag of keyboard percussion (xylophone, drum machine loops, a futuristic sample or two). 4/5

2. Die Sexuelle Revolution Feat. Francoise Cactus - a German-language version of the band's Eurovision entry, "La revolución sexual", the closest thing they've come to a mainstream hit single. The vocals are sung by half of the awesome French-German pop-rock duo, Stereo Total. This version veers more toward quirky Shibuya-kei than the poppy Spanish-language original, featuring a retro lounge-y intro ("sweet and sexy"), an echo of the classic J-pop "woo woo!" sample (for example at 0:28), and distorted vocals. 4/5

3. Surf Up & Down. Not my favorite. A mix of surf rock, Cornelius-style vocals and trippy/cartoony noises atop an extremely busy drum machine. Some nods to Brian Wilson. More a novelty than a fully developed song. 2/5

4. I Want You Back - a cover of the Jackson 5 classic. Fun, but forgettable. 2.5/5

5. Sexual Revolution Feat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spanish March 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This record takes off with alternative versions of some great songs... You can listen to La Nueva Yma Sumac in spanish & Japanese, La revolución sexual in english, japanese, french and spanish, Chicos malos in english and spanish. This travel takes you from the shibuya kei to the disco with Superguay. It also contains the covers Surf up and down, Love is in the air and the superb Joan Manuel Serrat's Classic 'Señora'. The last tracks are just a little bite of their live recordings.

I do not hesitate to give it 5 stars due to its catchy style, catchy music & catchy lyrics. There's no doubt that Guille Milkiway knows how to take you in a very nice trip with La Casa Azul
