Product Description

The HAP-100 is a preamp and headphone amplifier for the audio enthusiast for whom quality headphone listening is a priority. The HAP-100's innovative design offers features never before available at its modest price point. Most significantly, the HAP-100 shares technologies first employed in our flagship P-20 preamp, along with other audiophile-grade developments. As with the remarkable P-20, the HAP-100 exploits NuForce's most recent work in volume controls. At the unit's core is a switched-resistor ladder network of low-noise, thin-film resistors, one per volume setting, permitting discrete, high-resolution increments of 1dB for the HAP-100's one hundred volume steps.

Excellent preamp/headphone amplifier. Could serve as preamp in many primary systems. Detailed, extended, but smooth; extremely utilitarian which to me adds to its appeal. The secondary functions of the remote control (such as disabling output to power amp) can be a little problematic, and the numeric display must be viewed pretty much on axis to see, but overall, an excellent value that sounds great. This review written after five months of use.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to feed the output from a CD player directly to a power amp, providing the shortest and cleanest signal path. Most modern CD players can be directly connected to a power amp, but lack a built-in volume control. This is where this product comes in. Not only does it have a volume control, but up to four CD players or comparable components can be connected to it, with the HAP-100 allowing you to switch between them. Finally, as a bonus, it also contains a top quality headphone amplifier. Although not inexpensive, it fulfills it design purpose extremely well. The sound quality of signals fed through it is exemplary.

this is an excellent unit that is a headphone amplifier and an analog preamp. i read magazine reviews online before buying. i had several Emotiva power amps and only one preamp, so i bought and connected this to an Emotiva XPA-200 amp. the HAP-100 has 4 sets of analog inputs. sound is excellent, both to the power amp and through the built-in headphone amp.
i haven't tried the remote control yet, i prefer using the controls on the components.

the only minor annoyance is the volume control on the front panel. it is in such small increments that i had to turn it 3/4 of a turn to hear any sound at all. when i first connected it and turned it straight up to vertical there was no sound, so i re-checked my connections. it turns out that the volume has very precise control over the sound and has a LOT of increments. once i figured that out it wasn't a problem, but it takes getting used to. this model has been discontinued by the manufacturer (along with several other models) so right now it is probably the cheapest of the nice preamps. since it is available in black or silver, i might also get a silver one while they're cheap (399 black/349 silver) before the new model comes out).
