Book Description

5 and upK and up
“Joosse uses dialogue to add spunk and freshness to a nicely textured narrative that sets up a familiar scenario: the loving relationship between a little girl and her dog, Nugget, is tested when Nugget comes across a bedraggled kitten, and the girl takes it in. Truesdell’s illustrations, reminiscent of James Stevenson’s, are a hoot, smoothly tempering the inherent sentimentality of the story with a broadly comic depiction of Nugget’s vacillating emotions: curiosity, jealousy, dejection, and, finally, satisfied resignation as three individuals become a trio at last . . . . ‘Ahhh.’”—ALA Booklist

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW said that "the execution is uncommonly endearing" in this story about what happens when a girl and her dog adopt a kitten into their home. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3. Nell and her dog, Nugget, are best buddies?until Nell finds a kitten, whom she names Darling. As a result of the attention the girl showers on her new friend, Nugget feels unloved and unwanted. He has lost his favorite sleeping carpet to the newcomer, and Nell doesn't tell him jokes anymore. In the end, the child realizes how hurt he is and lets him know just how important he is to her. This dog's plight is nothing new, but the feelings are well presented and the pup is a winner. The story is sure to hit home with any child who feels displaced by a new sibling or classmate. The pen-and-ink cartoons with watercolors are full of energy and motion. This book is well suited for independent reading, but will also be a great discussion starter when read aloud.?Jean-Marie Kliphuis, Nesconset Elementary School, NY
