Eureka! Silver Honor Award for Excellence in Nonfiction. --California Reading Association

Although this book will have special appeal to the children of military families, anyone interested in planes will appreciate the high level of information provided in an attractive, accessible format. --School Library Journal --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

From the Inside Flap

Climb aboard the bird with Lt. "Gutts" Guttman and his pal Nugget, as they catapult off an aircraft carrier they call Mother. Pull a few Gs and test out your flight skills in a practice dogfight or check out the jets in the hangar. There's so much to see on this exciting tour of duty!

Nugget on the Flight Deck soars with real military jargon and facts about life aboard an aircraft carrier, and it's sure to make young readers--and future aviators--feel and talk like fighter pilots. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

More About the Author

Many people think writers sit in front of their computers sipping coffee waiting for inspiration to strike. My inspiration usually strikes in the car ferrying kids on field trips or driving to music lessons. I do my best to carve out two or three hours in the early morning after my kids leave for school and my husband leaves for work, but it doesn't always work out. After a few hours I have to change hats and work on a volunteer project or drive my kids someplace. In order to eke out another hour or so each day, I taught myself to write on the run. I carry a manuscript wherever I go. If a story needs a bit of research, I take the source with me and makes notes while waiting in the pick-up line at school. I call it power writing.

With the publication of Jingle the Brass, I discovered that public speaking is part of the writing process. My lively presentations are popular with schools and libraries, and I like to give my audience a new appreciation for the rigors of writing and selling a children's book.

Writing for children is the hardest thing I've ever done. The children's publishing field is extremely competitive, but I'm not deterred. I write because I can't imagine not writing. I write for myself and for the kids who read my work. I write for the joy of seeing a kid sitting in the front row at a school visit, hand stretched high to answer my questions. I write for the kid who tells me he's read my books 15 times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Climb aboard and grab some Gs!, October 1, 2009

(REAL NAME)
Join Lt. Guttman and a young nugget as the pilot takes the boy on his first hop in a real bird. We follow the duo as they don their zoombags and speed jeans, and climb into the fighter. Then it's, "Kick the tires and light the fires!" The catapult slings the plane off the flight deck at 200 mph into the sky for a mock dogfight with a bogey. The jargon just keeps on coming, building up the excitement and putting you in the cockpit where the jet pulls enough Gs to make your stomach swoop! Kids will love using these fun new words which are meticulously illustrated and defined in the margins. A perfect combo of lively writing and dynamic art, this expertly researched book will entice both military buffs and aspiring aviators of all ages. The fascinating end material offers hours of possibilities for those wanting to know more. An ideal read for Veterans Day (and the rest of the year too).

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done book, January 30, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son is an F-18 pilot aboard an aircraft carrier. My husband was also a Navy pilot. This book is fun to read and look at the pictures, but it is also extremely accurate and well done. I really like how she put the pilot "lingo" in italics and has a running glossary at the bottom of each page. My son is getting ready to deploy again and when he returns in 7 months, he will have his first little 4 month old son. I bought this book as a baby gift to give to him and his wife before he leaves. Perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything Aircraft Carriers for ages 5 - 8, November 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We got this book for our then 5 year old grandson last Christmas, a year later, and now being 6 - it is still one of his favortie books. He became so interested in flying and aircraft carriers that we searched out more books about flying and bought him a large toy aircraft carrier with planes. He now enjoys hearing everthing he can about flying and looking through his Grandpa's Flying Magazine. This book is very accurate and even tells the color codes for the different workers on the carriers and what they mean. We are trying to instill ideas in his young mind for varying posssiblilties as to what he might do professionally when he grows up. The facts and accuracy of this book really grabbed his imagination. Kids love information and facts about how things work , what they do, why they do it, and how. This book satifies that need in its area of experise in excellent fashion.
