Four discs 75,76,74,75 minutes in length each approximately. The sound overall is pretty good (unless you're an audiophile),especially considering when these tracks were recorded. There is occassionally some slight surface noise, but thankfully its in the background on the majority of these tracks. Another point is that, again, because of the recording era,the sound is slightly flat and one-dimensional. But none of that really gets in the way of enjoying this great music. The booklets (1 each in each jewel case) are informative, giving a look into both the various artists and this particular era. There is info on each track as to who is playing/singing and when the track was recorded. There are no photographs in the booklets. The four discs break down the years covered as follows-disc "A" 1945-1953,disc "B" 1953-1955,disc "C" 1955-1957,disc "D" 1957-1958.

These 105 tracks, all from the "golden age" (starting just after WWII) of gospel, contain a number of singing/arrangement styles. From the sweet tones of HAZEL CHATMAN with THE GOLDEN HARMONIZERS,and the GOLDEN GATE QUARTET,to the more declamatory style of SISTER ETHEL DAVENPORT with BROWNIE McGHEE,MARY DELOACH,EMILY BRAM,or the ANGELIC SINGERS & the DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS,this is some powerful music. Most consist of small groups with light instrumental backing, and the rest feature a single vocalist in a similar setting. Styles encompassed in this set range from jubilee, piano or guitar-playing soloist,to harder swinging groups for a great mix of styles. But no matter the style-the emphasis here is on the vocals and the message(s) which are very moving in their intensity.

The artists range from the well known (THE SOUL STIRRERS,FIVE BLIND BOYS of ALABAMA,THE HIGHWAY Q.C.'S etc.

Aptly titled, this collection works on two levels ... mining the vast back catalog of Gospel recordings for hidden gems (and they really are pure gold!) ... and it's a well-researched and documented overview of a period when Gospel's influence on music worldwide was at its peak. Opal Louis Nations has done an incredible job here. For the price of one CD you get 4 discs ... densely-packed with many of the best (and better known) gospel acts of the era, including early recordings of famous soul/R&B singers Lou Rawls, Sam Cooke, Mavis Staples that show their gospel roots. Collectors and gospel fans already know the story, but this collection has enough rare tracks to make it a must own regardless. Raw and rocking, moving and uplifting. This is great music no matter who you are or what you believe.

A wonderful compilation of music - has excellent liner notes - gives the Gospel roots of many Soul Music stars.

The sound quality is remarkably good given the age of the recordings. Multiple versions of Didn't It Rain one of many highlights.
Highly recommend.

im into lots of music, most of my life i listened to punk and metal, but the past ten years or so, i cant resist this kind of gospel. most the songs in this collection are about as good as it gets. very raw very spitrual. lots of chants, blues and some the earliest funky sounds ive ever heard. and the production is excellent. for me just right, but im no fan of clean production, so its not hard to please me, especially with music like this. one of my favorite jsp releases.

Clearly the recording equipment of the time was limited. The sweet sounding spirit of praise is not. I have enjoyed so much of this set. The lyrics are timeless. The enthusiasm is real. No need for auto tune or electric drums here. The delivery of each note is deliberate and powerful. Thank you.
