5.0 out of 5 stars He never went away...PETE BURNS RULES!
This album is actually not new, i have had it for over 2 years (I have the Japanes and Australian versions). I believe that Sony/Epic is trying to milk the 80's Band thing that is getting so much hype these days in the press (with the other gender bender & 80's bands touring: i.e Culture Club, and Duran Duran). Anyhoo... about the disc: it rocks, it's very HI...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.
Hey! This album has been released in the States by Cleopatra Records. It contains a couple new versions of "Spin Me Round", covers of "Rebel Rebel " (Bowie) and "Picture This" (Blondie), plus much more new, original material. It has its moments but some of the songs are less than spectacular. Its great to see Pete Burns back at work...

Anyhoo... about the disc: it rocks, it's very HI NRG and the "boys" have progressed on to a much more deeper and sophisticated sound (God love technology). The song "Sex Drive" was actually a side project done by Pete Burns about 4 years ago in a "band" called Glam. Other tracks on the CD, such as "Unhappy Birthday" was originally released in 1990 as a Japanese Import, "Fan The Flame, Part 1". The "Flame" CD is awesome but not dancey, its very melancholy and almost all songs are torch songs (who hurt you so bad Pete?). Anyways, I am a HUGE fan of Dead Or Alive and nothing they do can disappoint me, but this CD is awesome with its intense beats and Pete's burlesques-style singing... it is totally different from the 80's sound they used to have. The disco anthem "You Spin Me Round" has been remixed as well for the new flava. Like Dead Or Alive too ???? E-mail me at Bleu Mode2aol.com

This is a very very good CD by this band!! I was surprised actually at how good it really is! The title song is phenomenal as well as all of the other songs! The band proves that they still have what it takes in Spades to make a great dance album and stay creative and interesting! If only they could get America to get over You Spin Me Round and move on to the new music they are producing! Still a great great band!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead or Alive in the 90s: the same, yet different, April 6, 2000

Wow. This album rocks, and a big way. It's amazing that Pete and Co. have even lived, let alone triumphed, into the 21st century. "Nukleoptra" perfectly marries DOA's trademark 80s synth/glam/HiNRG style with a modern, 90s sound. Especially noticible on the "You Spin Me Round" and "Sex Drive" remixes, the sounds are familiar, yet very fresh. But what really shocked me was the new (well, new to us fans in the US who didn't know about the imports) tunes. The title anthem, "Nukleopatra," is so perfectly Pete, with hilarious lyrics and a great 90s dancehall wall of sound. Be sure to crank up the volume on this, and the rest of the tracks. "Unhappy Birthday" is wonderfully dark and tragic, yet you still can't help shaking it. A very different sound than what we're used to hearing from the bad boy from Liverpool. "Rebel Rebel" is dripping with irony and the lyrics seem eerily perfect for Pete. "The Right Stuff" is simply funky. Yes, there probably isn't much new ground broken here, but it's just so great hearing one of my (and practically everybody else's) favorite 80s groups make a successful metamorphosis into the 90s. Only now it's the 00s, so what could be in store? There are rumors of a new album, but Pete is famous for being flaky. Their 1998 US mini-tour miscarried before they ever left Europe, alas. I can't believe I waited so long to check out this CD... it's really strong and, in some ways, the most cohesive work from DOA in a decade and a half. Petey Boy hasn't lost his Ethel Merman-like ability to pound out pathos. When he sings "I'm a Star," I'm believing it. But alright already with the cosmetic surgery!

4.0 out of 5 stars It spins you right round, baby, right round . . ., December 5, 1998

You know the song, although you might have suppressed it. It's the `80s answer to "The Hustle," the grown-up spawn of both Walt Disney's "It's A Small World" and Shari Lewis' "The Song that Never Ends", the dance-club analog to "American Pie", "Stairway to Heaven" and "Rock Around the Clock", the song that everyone knows, the hit that will not leave your head for a week once I return it to your frontal lobe. Curious? Ready to activate that little hidden jukebox in your brain? Okay, all together now: "You spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round right round (repeat forever)."

Don't even think about cursing me for reminding you of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" as its appearance in last year's hit film "The Wedding Singer" all but guaranteed that it was going to emerge somehow as a key sonic component of the burgeoning `80s nostalgia trip that's (once again) subsuming disco, ska and punk under a (new) wave of burbling synths, mannered vocals and programmed beats. I'm just going with the retro flow here, even if it is way too soon for us to miss the `80s enough to resuscitate them.

While Adam Sandler's movie version of Dead or Alive's dance song from hell was entertaining, there's no substitute for hearing it from the mouth of Pete Burns, the stunningly androgynous poseur who first wrapped his lips around the ditty's tongue-twister chorus. "Nukleopatra" now offers two `90s style remixes of the big hit plus a dozen other synthetic confections (some originals, some covers) crafted by Burns and drummer Steve Coy-all of which sound (dare I say it?) amazingly fresh against today's techno and rave dancehall standards.

So was Pete Burns actually a visionary all those years ago? Hard to imagine, although he did cover KC and the Sunshine Band's "That's The Way (I Like It)" a full decade before it was hip to do so and his late `80s leather phase now looks disarmingly like something out of the Marilyn Manson fashion collection. Hack or hero, though, one thing is certain: Pete Burns and Dead or Alive are once again going to be spinning you right round baby right round in 1998 and (probably) beyond. Resistance is futile, mortals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorate CD's!, November 15, 2006

This review is from: Nukleopatra (Audio CD)
I have been a DOA fan from the very beginning, having discovered the group while working in a record store in New Orleans back in the eary 80's. I had lost track of the group after the nude CD was released back in '89. It was a great surprise when I discovered, just by change, that this CD was avalable when I bought it back in '98. Besides all of the songs being great, I had forgotten what a strong and unique voice Pete Burns really has. And it shines. With the exception of the "Spin round" being used again and rehashed, this is still one of my favorate CD's, and I am looking forward to new music being released in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, April 20, 2001

I bought this CD with a little hesitation. I had always loved DOA, but I just didn't know what to expect. The title track was all right, but it really grew on me. By the time "Sex Drive" was over I was hooked. I also forgot what a great voice Peter Burns has. Some of the lyrics are kinda goofball, but before you know it you'll be singing right along to them. Every person I told about this CD was shocked to hear they had a new one, and even more shocked at how much they liked it.

If you like the group and you like fast dance music this is the album for you. It is a rocking set of tunes that will make you speed if played in your car. I really enjoyed the classic dead or alive sound modernized with that 140 bpm dance sound. Great stuff!
