5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Set, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Numb3rs: Seasons 1-5 (DVD)
Well if you are looking at this in the first place, you know that Numb3rs is a great show, and this is a great way to check out the whole series. I just wanted to leave a note here that Seasons 4 & 5 in this set are not packaged like seasons 1-3. Each DVD in Season 4 & 5 are packaged individually, not all in the same pack like with seasons 1-3. Thought it was a bit strange, but overall doesn't affect much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great show!, June 7, 2010

This review is from: Numb3rs: Seasons 1-5 (DVD)
I couldn't wait for this to arrive and as soon as it did, I started watching it from beginning to end. I started watching numbers cause of rob morrow (northern exposure) and really enjoyed it. I would catch all the reruns and finally decided it was time to buy the package deal, of course the fact that it was on sale made it easier. I don't care for the packaging of the dvd's for the first couple of seasons, very hard to pop out dvd without feeling like you're going to break the dvd in half.

There is so much to this show that keeps you interested in watching it. The cases are one aspect but then you have all the interpersonal relationships. The Eppes brothers and their growth to friendship, the women in their life, their work, and of course their friends. You are introduced to characters that make mistakes, learn and grow with their experiences. I enjoy watching this show, it has its funny moments, sad and happy ones too and it doesn't get old. I look forward to the continued growth of the characters (though I miss Megan) and their relationships with each other. I like Colby, Larry and am totally in love with Don.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love numb3rs, but not the packaging, August 3, 2011

This review is from: Numb3rs: Seasons 1-5 (DVD)
Numb3rs is my favorite TV series of all time but a reasonable review about this product must separate into two parts - a review of the show and a review of the packaging.

Packaging

The packaging for Numb3rs has a lot of problems.

Seasons 1-3 are a fancy kind of packaging with beautiful graphics that puts 4-6 DVDs into a foldout cardboard thing for each season. Each season also has a sleeve that lifts up - so if you pull it off the shelf you may end up having them slip out and fall to the ground if you're not careful. The worst part though is that inside it is arranged by pairs of DVDs that can rub against each other and possibly damage the discs in routine handling.

Seasons 4 and 5 are done as 3 2-disc sets each, in a way which I think is fairly traditional and protective of the DVDs. But it totally mismatches the packaging for Seasons 1-3 both stylistically and functionally.

There is no big box for all 5 seasons to fit into.

Out of 26 or so DVDs in the package, one was defective (when I discovered it, I then tested all the others). Amazon could not replace this one disc and I did not want to return the 25 good ones (what if I just got another set with 1 bad disc?), so I settled for a small partial refund that was just enough money for me to buy a used set of the Second season (I haven't received it yet but all I hope for is a replacement for the bad disc). So score another minor victory for Amazon customer service.

The strangest thing of all is the pricing. Add together the prices for Seasons 1 through 5 individually and it usually costs less then this Season 1-5 combo. So what is the point of buying a set that isn't matching, costs more, and has packaging that I suspect could cause a higher than normal defect rate due to rubbing DVDs (Season 1-3)?

I purchased this when it was temporarily steeply discounted so I came out okay price wise, but the normal price doesn't make sense.

The show:

I'm a geek at heart so it's not surprising that I like this show. But much as I love the math aspects, there's a lot more to this show than that. The better shows manage to combine plausible plots, great drama, philosophical inquiry and reflection, interesting personalities and interactions between them - all while folding in the math in a very plausible way.

Of particular interest is the family - Math genius Charlie helps his older brother Don on FBI cases and the three of them often hang out with their father. Raising a math genius brings its challenges and being the brother of one brings even greater challenges - and this is explored in great depth throughout the series.

Not every show hits the mark. Some of them are so gruesome that you can't really think about much else that happened in the show (this is, after all, an FBI show). Others have thin plots that were clearly forced by the math. And occasionally there's a character that doesn't seem to fit in very well, like the female FBI agent in season 1.

But I'd say that over half the shows are very good, and a few of them are so outstanding that I've watched them multiple times - and is what motivated me to buy the complete series (I bought the last season separately).

FWIW, here's my favorite episodes of ones I've seen so far:

Season 1:
The Pilot
Sniper Zero
Dirty Bomb

Season 2:
Toxin
Protest
Mind Games

Season 3:
Hardball
Finder's Keepers

Season 4:

When Worlds Collide

Season 5:

Jack of All Trades
Disturbed

Season 6:

Shadow Markets
Con Job
Arm in Arms
Cause and Effect

Conclusion

I rank the show 5 and the packaging 1 for a net of 3. I don't regret buying the DVDs as I got tired of trying to stream them - Netflix had them for a while (but not seasons 1-2), then they didn't, then they did (all of them). Looks like Amazon Prime customers will be able to stream them soon too.

Until streaming becomes more consistently available and fast, I'm going to own and use DVDs for my favorite movies and shows. I don't have many in that category. But Numb3rs is one of them.
