Editorial Reviews

Tom Harrell is one of the world's most respected jazz trumpeters and composers. His original works achieve that rare balance between intricacy and musicality, being at once intellectually engaging and emotionally satisfying. In realizing this musical vision, Harrell has surrounded himself with like minded players and it is this, his "working band," that has appeared unchanged on five of his HighNote recordings. The result is a comfort level that approaches musical symbiosis and a recording which is much more than another entry in a discography, but is an event.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 IS NOT ALWAYS A QUINTET June 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Since 2007 until now Tom Harrell have the same quintet. Each record with HigNote are better and better. This one is really special. Are the same musicians but with different combination. Only four pieces are really quintets themes, the rest you can hear different combination; solo, duo, trio, always splendids. Harrell is now in his best moment. He play incredible and the arregements are great. The music have a special fluidity and also is very intensive. The album is great and the musicians are super. All are composition of Harrell except three. Probably could be the best music made and play by Harrell. Have the intimacy of the great jazz. 5 is a example the how a musician can grow and grow. Harrell never sound so great like in tis album.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE TOM HARRELL QUINTET'S COMPELLING JAZZ May 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Five ENJOYABLE Stars!! Exceptionally-talented musicians in a superb jazz quintet led by award-winning composer/arranger/trumpet legend Tom Harrell. This is one of the year's best jazz recordings from the long-running group which is as tight as they come, featuring co-producer Wayne Escoffery on reeds, Danny Grissett on keyboards, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. Varying the musical fare considerably on their fifth group recording, Harrell has added some marvelous lineup 'change ups' to the mix to spotlight the participant's talents, while giving a ton of solo space to everyone. The quintet 'post-bops' it with the unison-headed theme and solos of the hot-cool "GT" (with awesome Grissett, Okegwo, and Blake solos), and the sizzling "Melody in B-Flat" (fiery Blake solo). "Preludium" has a stark, obtuse beauty that develops patiently. This time around it's also wonderfully rewarding to hear Harrell play unaccompanied, highly-inventive flugelhorn on the de Paul/Rae jazz standard "Star Eyes" and on the gorgeous rendition of Tadd Dameron's "A Blue Time". Harrell forms an unaccompanied duo with drummer Johnathan Blake on a blazing version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Blue 'n' Boogie" and then another fruitful 'duo-only' with Danny Grissett on the soaring "Journey to the Stars" over an insistently developing vamp. The wistful "Right as Rain" is a beautifully arranged and played ballad. And perhaps best of all, "No. 5" with brilliant solos from all hands, especially Harrell, Escoffery, and Blake's 'boiler-works' in-tempo drum solo. This is marvelous jazz from Mr Harrell and company and gets my Highest Recommendation. Five SWINGING Stars! (11 tracks, Time: 61m7s)

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing album from Tom Harrell! June 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is very different from Tom's other releases on High Note, yet there is a real similarity here. This album features his long standing quintet, but has tracks where the entire quintet is not utilized. there are solo, duo and trio recordings. It makes for an interesting and engaging album. Although I purchased and enjoyed his last album, "The Time of the Sun", I find this one far more interesting and memorable. Most interesting were the solos tracks, which Mr. Harrell's playing is passionate and lyrical. All the members of the quintet play exceptionally well. And being a huge fan of Ugonna Okegwo, I was happy to here many solo's from him and all the other members. Although, 5 stars are a cliche on amazon, this album has received multiple spins from me, and I have found it as enjoyable, if not more so as the first spin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Harrell's Trumpet Sound April 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have many recordings of Tom Harrell and this is right up there with the many that I have.
He is a unique performer and the band was excellent, but that was to be expected.
The CD I wanted and not just a download. There are certain CD's that I still wish to have the real thing.
Shipment came quickly and I am enjoying listening.
