#1 Hits of the Sixties certainly does give you #1 hits of the 1960s; but the record label putting this one out certainly didn't bother themselves to add a couple more songs like they should have! To be fair, maybe they couldn't get the rights to add a certain song or two; but I still can't believe ten hits is all they could scrounge up. That disappoints me. Therefore, this will be a generous four star review; the album keeps the four stars that it gets because the CD is inexpensive so how much complaining can anyone actually do? On the bright side, the quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork very much.
The Angels do a wonderful job on their mega hit "My Boyfriend's Back." "My Boyfriend's Back" really shines in the capable hands of The Angels; they sing and harmonize to perfection--and beyond. This tune also has that classic 60's girl group sound and I'm very impressed. The percussion also enhances the number--I think that's handclapping; how creative these ladies were! Joe Dowell also weighs in with a hit that always charms me with its natural beauty, he sings "Wooden Heart" with panache and just one listen proves it. Joe Dowell doesn't get the recognition he deserves these days; but maybe that will change for the better--he sure was a crooner!
The legendary Connie Francis sings "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" without letting go of a superfluous note; she has the most wonderful voice and she could never be forgotten even all these years later. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" is easily a major highlight of this album. Great! Of course, there's the remarkably strong tune from the quasi-fictional band Steam performing their mega hit entitled "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)." "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" still gets airplay on the local "oldies" radio station; I could never tire of hearing Steam sing this one up right. Listen also for "Leader of the Pack" by The Shangri-Las; this was a huge hit for them and it got a lot of airplay back in the day.
Lou Christie does great justice to his hit "Lightnin' Strikes;" Lou could sing side by side with the best of them and this song proves it. "Lightnin' Strikes" has a great musical arrangement--but wisely the music never steals the show away from Lou. He remains squarely front and center in the spotlight; and that's quite all right by me! Shelley Fabares contributes her awesome hit "Johnny Angel;" and Little Leslie Gore sings "It's My Party" without a hitch! Leslie had the chops to sing anything she wanted to sing; and her talent took her far.
Little Eva does "The Loco-Motion" with lots of style and positive energy; her excellent diction enhances her performance all the more. The backup vocalists certainly harmonize well--not that Little Eva needed it; but they do sound nice. The CD ends with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers. This isn't exactly my favorite 60's tune but I can tell that The Righteous Brothers did have talent anyway.
Overall, this budget priced CD is aimed primarily at people who merely want a few broad brushstrokes introduction or a brief retrospective of the great music of the 1960s. The diehard fan would do well to look for more comprehensive CDs and box sets of this genre of music.
