Number Talks

1. A five- to fifteen-minute classroom conversation around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally.

2. The best part of a teacher s day.

This resource was created in response to the requests of teachers those who want to implement number talks but are unsure of how to begin and those with experience who want more guidance in crafting purposeful problems. This dynamic multimedia resource supports teachers in understanding:

* what a classroom number talk is;
* how to follow students thinking and pose the right questions to build understanding;
* how to prepare for and design purposeful number talks; and
* how to develop grade-level-specific strategies for the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Number Talks includes connections to NCTM s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, as well as an abundance of reference tables to help you quickly and easily locate strategies, number talks, and video clips.
Facilitator s Guide
While the book may be used as an independent resource, it is also structured to provide a framework for collaborative learning groups or to provide professional development opportunities through grade-level teams, individual schools, or districts. Chapter 9 serves as a facilitator s resource, providing guidance for use of the video clips by grade level along with discussion questions to support reflection and collegial conversations about number talks and students learning.

DVD
The accompanying DVD provides a visual platform for teachers to reflect on their current practices and target essential understandings from their readings. The DVD features 19 number talks filmed in actual classrooms, plus seven bonus tracks highlighting interviews with the author and teachers. Clips range from five to ten minutes in length with a total viewing time of approximately two hours.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Sherry Parrish outlines the very best way to teach math to young children and gives educators access to the ideas and methods that they will need. This book is a valuable resource for anyone who cares about children s mathematical development. --Jo Boaler, professor, Stanford University author of What s Math Got to Do with It? Helping Children Learn to Love Their Least Favorite Subject

The practice of number talks is one of the most powerful vehicles I know for helping students learn to reason with numbers and make mathematically convincing arguments, for building a solid foundation for algebraic reasoning, and for teaching mathematics as a sensemaking process. If all teachers make this shift in their practice, it would represent a profound advancement in mathematics education. --Ruth Parker, CEO Mathematics Education Collaborative (MEC)

This book was read by all of our elementary summer school math teachers this summer. They loved the book and used the number talks in their classrooms. Each of them felt that using the number talks increased the students' math abilities more than we have ever seen students' math abilities grow over the past summer we have held summer school. Each of them said that this was going to impact their teaching this coming school year as well. I will be using this book to help the school I am working with this year to help them increase their students math scores on our state assessment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource for Professional Development!! April 14, 2011

This book is a must for any educator who wishes to develop problem solving strategies in their learners. I would even recommend it for a book study group, especially since it comes with a DVD--that really helps to gain an understanding in how students think about problems, as well as inadvertently demonstrating some great class management techniques. It outlines a lot of strategies that you can teach the kids in mini-lessons, and is very doable to add into your routine. I highly recommend it!!

My only wish was that the DVD contained some classroom examples of 1st graders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good resource for the Common Core December 16, 2012

I am using this with my k-2 grade teachers. Many of them are afraid of the Common Core. This gives them deeper understanding of the math practices and why they are important in helping students become fluent in math.

5.0 out of 5 stars Number Talks February 13, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Since the moment it arrived I have been using the activities in Number Talks: Helping Children Build Mental Math and Computation Straties. The children's math computation has improved tremendously and they have begun trying out different strategies that other children use. With the new National Core Curriculum in Math being institued in the next school year, this book is a must!

This is the best book! It was worth every penny. It is great for teaching mental math. I use it everyday and it is unbelievable what my 3rd graders can do. I have taught 3rd grade for 15 years and I have never had a class that can add, subtract and multiply in their heads like this! This book is FANTASTIC!

I have been working through these strategies with my lower level 7th and 8th graders. Their fact fluency has shot through the roof and I have seen their mental math ability multiply in the few short weeks Ihave had so far with my students. An amazing book! I highly recommend to all math teachers regardless of your grade level.
