Editorial Reviews

Numbers' debut Life is decidedly lo-fi, but what the Tigerbeat6 band does with their garage aesthetic is pretty amazing. Taking a cue from Gang of Four, Dave Broekema's angular guitar is sure to get listeners on their feet. But this album isn't just disco-punk. The Numbers infuse their rants with Indra Dunis' android-sexy vocals and Eric Landmark's Moog and homemade "Buzzerk" synthesizer. The band clangs like Clinic through ten insane tracks, running from the no wave anthem "I'm Shy" to the bleep and gurgle of the anti-capitalist dance jam "We Like Having These Things" and the robotic, telephone-operator funk of "Human Replace." The Numbers still lack the polish of similarly inspired bands like Radio 4, but like Whirlwind Heat and Erase Errata, they're leading punks back to the dancefloor with synthesizer-driven craziness. One day, they might make an album like Clinic's Internal Wrangler, but for now they are re-establishing one of punk's greatest attributes, the sense that anyone with a voice can grab whatever equipment they can get their hands on and make some noise. ~ Charles Spano, All Music Guide

2.0 out of 5 stars thump thump thump thump, March 24, 2004
This review is from: Numbers Life (Audio CD)
all of the songs sound the same, and this sound isn't even pleasant, innovative, or original.

thump thump thump thump "driving song!" thump thump thump thump "driving song!".

that about sums up the whole album. even after seeing them live, i'm not impressed.
