Absolutely marvelous,
By Assela Pathirana (Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Numerical Methods for Engineers: With Software and Programming Applications (Hardcover)
The strongest point in favor of this book is the fact that authors seems to have taken an effort to see the problems from students viewpoint: i.e. from a viewpoint of a person who does not know Numerical Methods and want to learn them without facing unnecessary complications. Topics are comprehensive and clear. Excellent resource for students at undergraduate or graduate level. No wonder it won ASEE Meriam/Wiley award. Highly recommended. (NOTE: As with the case with many textbook readers, I did not read the book cover-to-cover. The review is based on a few sections that I read. )

Brighten the darkness,

This is the book that I used when I first time learning numerical methods. It has very clear explanations which could open my eyes, brighten the darkness of my numerical knowledge. Now I am using it as a textbook for numerical class that I teach. Highly recommended for the beginners.

Great book for self-study,

I'm not an engineer. I majored in economics at MIT, and over the past few years have worked as an economic analyst. Recently, I needed to learn and review some numerical techniques in a short time frame. One of my co-workers suggested this book. In contrast to many other numerical methods texts, it is very clearly written and has lots of examples. I used the book to quickly learn about topics like cubic splines and solving partial differential equations. The author obviously cares about efficiently communicating concepts to students.

The authors use a very pedagogical approach. The objectives for each part are well identified, the explanations are intuitive, and there is a lot of engineering applications and exercises. This book is hence suitable for an undergraduate course or as a starting point in the subject.
However, if you are searching for long mathematical demonstrations or advanced mathematical aspects (this was not my case), this is not your book.

This book is an excellent undergraduate introductory text for numerical methods. Chapra and Canale has been the market leader for awhile and this old version comes at a nice price, too!

Had to buy this for one of my classes as an ME. The bookstore on campus sold it for almost twice as much. Great deal. Great price!

This was an okay book to use for my Numerical methods course. A lot of DE was involved. Not a lot of graphics and no study guide at the time i used it.

I really like this book. I am teaching Programming Applications for Engineers and it is perfect. It uses advanced Excel Power tools and MATLAB, both of which we use, and its examples are from all walks of engineering careers. It is clearly written, explains the mathematical model behind the numerical method. I can't get enough of using it.

A excellent book ruined by clutter,
By dhurandhar (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

The basic content of the book is excellent. However, in trying to cover different packages and/or languages the book loses its charm.
This book is a glaring example of how an otherwise excellent textbook can be ruined by clutter. If the authors had stayed with Fortran/C or Matlab (but not both) and provided more of ready made programs or subroutines, it would be a lot more useful. |
