'Applied Respiratory Physiology' was first published in 1969 and through four editions has become the classic text on respiratory physiology. It has been revised throughout for this fifth edition, ensuring it will continue to be the definitive text for anaesthetists, physiologists and all those seeking information on the basic principles and applications of lung function. The reader will find it to be a comprehensive description of respiratory physiology in health, disease and altered conditions and environments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

....this text remains the primary source of reference information for any health care practitioner involved in the management of patients' respiration. The essentials of respiratory physiology such as compliance, resistance, gas exchange, etc. are not covered in adequate depth in the standard texts of medicine or anesthesia, and any resident in these fields
should have access to this text. It is also an unparalleled source of information for any physician teaching in these areas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better book......., August 17, 2001

This review is from: Nunn's Applied Respiratory Physiology, 5e (Paperback)
The 5th Edition of this book has been revamped by Dr Lumb to its infinite benefit. Nunn's used to be a book that you waded through after getting the essentials from Wests more concise book. Studying for my anaesthetics primary this year I found the new edition much more readable and with its specialised sections in the rear (pathophysiology and altered physiology) will be a book that I will keep referring to in the furture.

The book still is a little irrelevant to me in some of its detail and it can often be difficult to determine the exact point that is trying to be made but the change in editorship has made for a great improvement.

One section that puzzles me is the first which seems quite a detailed explaination of atmospherics which has very little relevance to the topic matter in reality.

Still an essential for both the trainee and then clinician alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for the anaesthetic primary exam, November 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is essential if you are studying for your anaesthetic primary exams. It explains respiratory physiology thoroughly, albeit sometimes in too much detail. Excellent graphs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Respiratory made easy, August 1, 2008

To clarify: I am a Nurse Anesthetist student with an extensive critical care background. That said, this book does an outstanding job of taking a very complex subject and breaking it into digestible peices. I wish I had read this 10 years ago as my understanding of and care for patients with critical respiratory issues would have been greatly improved.

I would recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how the respiratory system works from a macro to micro level.
