Product Description

Join a live audience to watch the Little Sisters of Hoboken display their divine talents in a zany benefit revue. In an effort to raise money for their fallen Sisters--unfortunate victims of a convent cooking accident--Mother Superior (The Golden Girls' Rue McClanahan) and her order of eccentric and endearing nuns show the lighter side of being Catholic. With riotous dance numbers, show-stopping songs and side-splitting wit, you'll swear Nunsense was heaven-sent! This video of the long-running hit musical features scenes not included in the television broadcast. Rue McClanahan, Christine Anderson, Semina De Laurentis, Christine Toy. 112 minutes.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken, residents of Mt. St. Helens Convent and teachers at the school, have a problem. It seems Sister Julia (Child of God) has accidentally killed off 52 sisters with a botulism-laced vichyssoise. But even worse, the remaining nuns only had enough cash to bury 48 of the dearly departed; the other four are in the freezer. Nunsense is a benefit concert staged by the Little Sisters to raise money for a proper burial (before the health inspector comes).

Mother Superior Mary Regina (Rue McClanahan) is determined to put on a good show and raise some money with the help of her faithful followers Sister Robert Anne (Christine Anderson), Sister Mary Amnesia (Semina De Laurentis), Sister Mary Leo (Christine Toy), and Sister Mary Hubert (Terri White). McClanahan knows how to work a live audience and keeps them laughing. Though she's not a singer, she admirably talks her way through Dan Goggin's songs. The other sisters have terrific voices; while most of the songs are chorus style, each does get a chance to shine. Streetwise Sister Robert Anne's number "I Just Want to Be a Star" is particularly good, and a medley by the "St. Andrews Sisters" exemplifies the sisters' lovely and strong harmony.

Nunsense, filmed off-Broadway in 1993, is good, clean fun filled with enthusiastic performers and well-done songs. The choreography, however, is rather unimaginative. You don't need to have attended Catholic school to enjoy Nunsense. There are a few pokes at the Catholic religion, but Nunsense is mainly a gentle send-up of the convent way of life, told through the lens of a zany musical comedy. --Dana Van Nest

I first saw this show when it ran on PBS ages ago and even as a late elementary age kid i loved it! The songs are catchy (adicting if you're not careful) and each of the ladies plays her part the way it was meant to be played. Sure the presentation of the film itself (incorperating the actual audience in shot) may seem a bit undesirable to someone who hasn't seen it live, but it works for this film! I had the pleasure of playing Sr. Robert Ann in a high school production of this show and each of us worked hard to capture the essence of our characters that was displayed in this version. Some people are under the mistaken impression that this show makes fun of Catholicism but i couldn't disagree with them any stronger. Likewise you deffinately don't have to be Catholic to enjoy the show. When i moved out of my parents house and into my own apartment i swiped their copy of this movie. They're now begging me to either buy my own copy or buy one for them! Definately a good laugh! So make Nunsense a habit around your house today!

Each time I watch this video it gets funnier and funnier! Rue McClanahan shows her great comic talent as Sr. Mary Regina! She wonderfully played a slut in "The Golden Girls" to playing a nun! Who knew? The rest of the cast (Terri White, Christine Toy, Christine Anderson and Semina De Laurentis) are sensational! Even though Rue M. is the most famous one, each of the ladies in this production show that each of them has a terrific star quality! My recommendation for anyone who loves musical theatre is to buy this video immediately! You won't regret it!

"Nunsense", the musical that started it all! Followed later by Nunsense II and finally Nunsense III: Sister Mary Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree, this is perhaps the best of all three musicals. The video has become the starting ground and "Bible" for many productions of Nunsense in professional as well as semi-professional and amateur theatres.

Nunsense is one of the funniest shows that has ever been played on stage. The cast is Brilliant especially Rue McClanahan who plays the Mother Superior and the actress who plays Sister Mary Amnesia. It is hysterical and it has many great word plays such as the cook of the convent Sister Julia (Child of God) who poisons the whole convent. The others in the series are also great but this one is by far the best

The movie is rather slow at the beginning. But the scene with Rue Mc... as Mother Superior after tasting something she shouldn't have is absolutely the funniest I've seen in a long time. BTW -- this is the 3rd video of this I've purchased. Someone "borrowed" the first and didn't return it. The 2nd I gave to my mother after she saw the movie, and then I ordered a third for ME!

The version is comparable to the Off-B-Way one. Excellent actresess, good participation of the audience and funny as the original one from NY. Ms. McCallaham has the performance of her life as Mother Superior. Shame it has no subtitles, but anyway, you will greatly enjoy it specially if you watch it in a group of friends.

Nunsense II continues to remain on the shipping list. However, Nunsense, in my opinion, was one of the best comedy films to ever hit the wide screen after being a hit on Broadway. I was a student that was taught by a religious order, as was my wife, and we cannot get enough of this movie to keep our religious spirits at a very high level of joy within our daily life. A lot of the incidents within this movie and the broadway play came back into our life since we were educated by the Felician Sisters of Enfield Ct. The writers of the play as well as the producer and director of the movie should have been given an Oscar for their efforts. I began laughing at the onset of putting the disc into the player even before the first words were spoken and have not stopped laughing since the first time I saw the movie and haven't stopped laughing since. Whenever my wife mentions our dearest school mate who eventually became a nun within the Felician Order, a smile comes to this person's face only to begin laughing all over again. You just cannot get enough of this movie. I have not seen Nunsense II as yet but I am sure it is just as good a movie as Nunsense turned out to be, if not better. I can't wait to get the movie so that the laughter in this house can continue to bring us back to our golden/olden days of our grade school up-bringing. To the sisters who brought us through those wonderful years from kindergarden through the 8th grade and then on through our high school days. my wife and I can only say "Thank you sisters for all you did to not only bring us together but to keep us together for the 50 years of marriage to be celebrated on June 22. May your dearly departed souls rest in peace and we pray to see you again on the other side.
