4.0 out of 5 stars stellar concept for futuristic release by Tajai and SupremeEX, July 30, 2006
This review is from: Nuntype (Audio CD)
NUNtype is in a class all its own. Being a story about a GOD who gets bored and decides to test humanity, a race which turns out to be failing and faulted. Not too clear on what the whole story is, but what I do know is that the beats are nice and futuristic, more electro, trip hop and drum and bass than hip hop. The beats are atmospheric and some ar sprinkled with interesting samples. Tajai's lyrical flow is somewhat different that what I have heard on Power Movement, more story teller-ish, and more character orientated. So far I really enjoy the CD. It is hard to recommend though because only a select few will enjoy it. Hip hop purists might not enjoy this as much as I do, and the casual listener would grow bored with the absense of choruses or a coherent verse. But to me, its an excellent concept album that falls into the catagory of what I was looking for. I was hoping for more lyrics from Tajai, but here he is more story teller. I would give it a five, but the production is a little lacking in some areas. The best tracks are Formless, Hemingway, Meaning. There are a lot of instrumentals on this album and it was not worth the sixteen dollars I paid for it(included shipping). I was really hoping for more lyrics....

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album, A Great Concept, December 11, 2005
By
wander (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nuntype (Audio CD)
As far as concept albums go, Supremeex and Tajai have really been hitting it home with their subsequent releases. I was big fan of Projecto despite its short length, but Nuntype more or less makes up for it. I say more or less because as another reviewer pointed out, Tajai rhymes *and* does some narration. This isn't bad at all, really, because he's still rhyming but in a more "let me tell you a story" kinda way. The thing about Projecto was the songs could easily be extracted from the overall narrative and hold their own as solo tracks. Nuntype is much more integarted as a concept album which as a whole is a plus. But the side effect of this is some songs on Nuntype, when taken out of the full album context wouldnt really make sense if you heard it on, say, college radio for example. Again, this is not really a diss because as a whole album, Nuntype really is a solid record. For the tracks that are more ambiguous in their context such as Goapele's, "Meaning", "Formless" and the others - the songs are some of Tajai's best. And SupremeEx, I feel, will really hit his stride in the coming years, and albums like Nuntype and Projecto will be looked upon in retrospect as amazing pieces of work. 4 stars - not perfect, but worth every penny.
