4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a comedic fix, June 20, 2011

This review is from: Nurse Jackie: Season Three (DVD)
This is a show that I continue to enjoy more and more each season. All of the characters continue to evolve, especially the supporting ones. In this season, Jackie and Kevin cope with Jackie's addiction, which also causes a major rift between Jackie and O'Hara. Grace continues to suffer, which adds to the tension in the Peyton household. Eddie continues to try Jackie's patience, and really alienates her when he starts flirting with Kevin's sister. Perhaps the most fin character to watch in Season Three is Gloria Acolitis, who embarks on a fight against childhood obesity in hopes of impressing First Lady Michelle Obama, and also raises hell when the statues from the All Saints Chapel are removed. She's hilarious!

The only reasons I gave the season four stars instead of five are that the "cliffhanger" is something I totally saw coming and was extremely predictable. Also, I was a bit disappointed with where the show took Coop's character this season. He was made out to be much more vulnerable than in seasons past, but it was just boring to watch. Hopefully he will be back to his ridiculous self in Season Four.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nurse Jackie just gets better and better ...., August 15, 2011
This review is from: Nurse Jackie: Season Three (DVD)
I love my Nurse Jackie fix and Season 3 DID NOT DISAPPOINT! You see many of the characters evolve and this season begins to show Jackie's world crumbling all around her. Her house of sand begins to sink but not without a handful of fun, humor, tears and a few jolts along the way.

Nurse Jackie Season 3 builds beautifully and leaves her die-hard fans aching for a fix in Season 4. Edie Falco is marvelous and does a great job with the support of her cast. One of my favorite shows. Like those little pills Jackie is so very fond of, this show is addictive from the start!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dramedy On TV!, February 20, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I Am so happy Nurse Jackie got renewed It is the best show on showtime. No matter how people feel about the show and the sometime ludicrous story's the show exposes life as a drug addict. Nurse Jackie depicts the life of a desperate and struggling drug addict. and I do love the supporting cast. This is a great show to make you laugh and think at the same time. this is a show that is about a touchy subject but it is done so well. I think Edie Falco is the best of the best and made this show her own. The third season deals with jackie's family, friends, and coworkers finding out about her addiction. This show is growing and progressing at a great speed and always has a wonderful storyline. Nurse Jackie keeps you thinking what is coming next. There are very few shows that are on TV that are smart and witty like this. I hope this Show sticks around for a long time this is just beyond top quality programing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jackie's life is a mess!, February 26, 2012
This review is from: Nurse Jackie: Season Three (DVD)
Season three is a continuation of the great storyline of Nurse Jackie. The scripts are well written and the acting is right on. Sadly, Jackie is spiraling downward and her life is becoming a total mess. Her family life is falling apart, her children have problems, Jackie is becoming a major drug addict, and her coworkers are reaching a point where they don't know how to deal with her. To top all of that off, her husband is just fed up with the whole situation.

Jackie is so addicted that she buys drugs, steals them from the hospital pharmacy, patients, people on the streets and even her family. People who try to help her are getting exasperated that their efforts are wasted as Jackie has just become a habitual liar.

The hospital suspects a problem and Jackie is worried about losing her job....

You might think I just gave you a bunch a spoilers but you already knew most of this from the prior seasons and the joy of watching this show is seeing what happens next.

Parts of this third season are hilarious and other parts are just downright sad. You will feel the whole spectrum of emotions for Jackie, her family and coworkers and for the patients as you are brought into their lives on a personal level. This is one of the best series on TV and these DVDs are a wonderful way to kill a rainy day.

Watch this series on DVD, you will enjoy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chicken or the Egg? Which Comes First?, June 22, 2011
This review is from: Nurse Jackie: Season Three (DVD)
I enjoyed this season but I can't say I was totally knocked out by it. Perhaps the aspect I enjoyed the most was that it became increasingly difficult to tell which of Jackie's problems came first. Specifically, she has a great deal of trouble being a wife and mother on a day in and day out basis. Was it a big mistake for her to try and meld herself to those roles? (Of course, the pressure to do so in our society is enormous.) So I had to start asking myself: is this woman's primary problem substance abuse or is she self medicating in order to get her through the day in living a life to which she cannot adapt? She is well cut out for being a nurse and I got the sense that if she just did the nursing with no family, she might cope a heck of a lot better.

I also know that the question I've just posed is very controversial within the substance abuse community. There is one camp which views it as a separate disease in and of itself and that emotional and mental health problems are a side issue. Then there is the mental health community which takes a more holistic view, that the person has a serious overall mental health problem which needs addressing, that she isn't "just" a substance abuser.

Now, if all of the above had been played out in a drama, enhancing the conflict for max impact, this would be a five star season for me. The problem for me is that the show flirts with this serious dramatic conflict but in the end would prefer to be viewed as comedy. That is how the show is classed and how it competes come Emmy time. Yes, there are comedic moments, the statues in the chapel, much beloved by the hospital administrator, are first removed and then returned as Cooper tries to get married with comic panache. Also, that same character's obsession with Michelle Obama and the childhood obesity cause are pretty funny too.

But in the end I would really like to explore her drug issues, her issues with her daughters and her husband, her affair and now friendship with Eddie and so forth. They are what really interest me. However, if you prefer the comedy slant, then this season may be worth five stars to you. It comes down to a matter of individual preference.
