In season two, Nurse Jackie's title character was hiding prescription drugs in her daughters' plastic Easter eggs. Now, in season three (with 12 episodes, plus bonus material, on three discs), she's stealing pain medicine intended for cancer patients. And so continues the slow but inexorable downward spiral of Jackie Peyton (Emmy winner Edie Falco, excellent as always), one of the more conflicted and nuanced individuals on TV. It's not a pretty sight--compelling, yes, and often darkly funny, but sometimes also hard to watch, as a basically appealing character's reaction to the deep hole she's put herself in is to pull out a shovel and keep digging. As the season opens, Jackie has rejected an attempt at a drug intervention by husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and best friend Dr. O'Hara (Eve Best). This is a "world-class liar," as one character describes her, and by now Jackie's very skilled at denying she has a habit while taking ever more sneaky steps to satisfy it, regardless of the effects on her relationships with anyone in her orbit (the task doesn't get any easier when her dealer is run over by a truck). Still, when it comes to the patients, she's also the most caring, if occasionally vengeful, caregiver at New York's All Saints Hospital, a nurse who comforts a father whose son has just died of renal failure, blindsides a jerk on a skateboard who nearly runs over an elderly woman (breaking his wrist in the process), or helps a kid whose own mother is a hopeless druggie. Meanwhile, the ensemble work by the other regular members of the cast--nurses Zoey (Merritt Wever), Thor (Stephen Wallem), Sam (Arjun Gupta), and threatening newcomer Kelly (Gbenga Akinnagbe); preening Dr. Cooper (Peter Facinelli); boss Gloria Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith); and pharmacist/sometime boyfriend Eddie (Paul Schulze)--is better than ever at maintaining the show's balance of pathos, quirky humor, and interpersonal drama. There are also a few curves thrown our way--especially in episode 12, when an out-of-left-field confession reveals Jackie to be a first-class hypocrite on top of everything else--that are sure to keep viewers coming back for season four. --Sam Graham

Product Description

Still high and mighty! The Showtime® hit series "Nurse Jackie" ended season two with the ugly truth closing in on super-nurse Jackie Peyton. Jackie's best friend and husband put the pieces together about her pill-popping ways and confronted her about her addiction. But if the people in her life think one little intervention is going to stop her, they don't know Jackie. The great white liar returns for another hilarious season of 12 episodes on 3 discs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a comedic fix June 20, 2011
Format:DVD
This is a show that I continue to enjoy more and more each season. All of the characters continue to evolve, especially the supporting ones. In this season, Jackie and Kevin cope with Jackie's addiction, which also causes a major rift between Jackie and O'Hara. Grace continues to suffer, which adds to the tension in the Peyton household. Eddie continues to try Jackie's patience, and really alienates her when he starts flirting with Kevin's sister. Perhaps the most fin character to watch in Season Three is Gloria Acolitis, who embarks on a fight against childhood obesity in hopes of impressing First Lady Michelle Obama, and also raises hell when the statues from the All Saints Chapel are removed. She's hilarious!

The only reasons I gave the season four stars instead of five are that the "cliffhanger" is something I totally saw coming and was extremely predictable. Also, I was a bit disappointed with where the show took Coop's character this season. He was made out to be much more vulnerable than in seasons past, but it was just boring to watch. Hopefully he will be back to his ridiculous self in Season Four.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nurse Jackie just gets better and better .... August 15, 2011
Format:DVD
I love my Nurse Jackie fix and Season 3 DID NOT DISAPPOINT! You see many of the characters evolve and this season begins to show Jackie's world crumbling all around her. Her house of sand begins to sink but not without a handful of fun, humor, tears and a few jolts along the way.

Nurse Jackie Season 3 builds beautifully and leaves her die-hard fans aching for a fix in Season 4. Edie Falco is marvelous and does a great job with the support of her cast. One of my favorite shows. Like those little pills Jackie is so very fond of, this show is addictive from the start!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Long Road of White Lies and Drug Addiction March 19, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Edie Falco is back as zany, pill-popping, doesn't-know-a-great-husband-until-she-loses-him, Nurse Jackie.

The dark comedy is also back--maybe more so in the third season. However, until the final episode, "Deaf Blind Tumor Pee-Test", where Jackie learns of a dramatic confession from her husband, Kevin, that will change the dynamics of the family, nothing really changes in the life at All Saints Hospital.

But the same old stories between a great cast of actors keeps the show lively, funny, and above all, watchable. And the actors bring an interesting light to their characters. You have Gloria Akalitus, nursing manager of All Saints, who rarely cracks a smile. But the third season offers a few laugh-out-loud moments with an ongoing storyline of Gloria's "infatuation" with the First Lady, Michelle Obama.

And it takes Dr. Eleanor O'Hara and Jackie a few episodes to regroup from the tumultuous news pitting Jackie's drug addiction and her layers of lies from last season and to become the best friends that they were last time we saw them. And Dr. O'Hara is back in her sleek, beautiful self--with the chic high heels and sarcastic one-liners to boot.

Zoey Barlow and her bright pink scrubs are back for a full season of good times. During the scene when Jackie's husband, Kevin, enters the ER and asks to speak to his wife, Zoey is miffed, and things go from bad to worse--in a heartbeat. Lies upon lies upon lies...Will Jackie learn to walk the straight line, in a straight line? Probably not. But that is why we tune in every week to see what happens.

Eddie Walzer returns to his post in the hospital's pharmacy. But it cannot be good when Kevin suggests to Jackie that his friend needs a job at All Saints. But little does Kevin know the white lies his wife has weaved over the course of three seasons.

Self-absorbed and flighty at times, Dr. Fitch Cooper tries to prove to everyone, including Gloria, that he is ready to be ER chief. But as luck would have it, someone else has already beaten him to it. But as he works feverishly for the top position, watching his dogged persistence throughout the series is, if nothing else, entertaining and charming.

Thor Lungdren and Sam are two of my favorite characters. Too bad they do not have enough airtime, or a few dramatic storylines of their own. Their feisty personalities seem limited in season three.

And Jackie and Kevin's children are always affected by one of their mother's bizarre, unforgiving dilemmas. And Jackie seems to have many more problems in season three. By the end, things will definitely change for everyone at All Saints Hospital--and for the direction of Showtime's madcap, hilarious Nurse Jackie.
