Book Description

April 1967

Out of print for much of the 20th century, the first color edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland features the classic story adapted for younger readers by Lewis Carroll himself

The story of Alice and her curious adventures continues to enchant generations of adults and children alike. This picture book version will bring back many happy memories for parents and grandparents and is a perfect introduction to all the magic and humorous mayhem of Wonderland. First published in 1890, this newly rediscovered treasure is a perfect gift; ideal for all the family, and a joy to share aloud. At the end of the book is Carroll's original preface, along with three short additional works which were included in the first edition. "A Nursery Darling" is a poem Carroll composed for this nursery edition, his Christmas Greetings was first inserted in leaflet form into copies of Alice issued at Christmas 1871, and An Easter Greeting was bound into the first edition of Through the Looking Glass.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Lewis Carroll was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), a mathematician famous for his books for children. The Alice stories were written for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the dean of his college. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1872) have been loved by adults and children ever since. Sir John Tenniel (1820–1914) was a Victorian topical cartoonist, caricaturist, and illustrator. Famous during his life for his contributions to the satirical magazine Punch, he is best remembered today for his work in Alice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to Alice, December 10, 2010

First, the review that states this book is misprinted is incorrect. This version of The Nursery Alice - by English Rose Publishing - does not have the misprinted quotation marks. The Mediamorphosis version of this book, however, DOES have the misprinted quotation marks and should be avoided.

That said, this (the English Rose Publishing) version of The Nursery Alice is fantastic. The Nursery Alice condenses some of the major elements of Alice in Wonderland into small two to three page "Chapters" with beautifully colored illustrations by John Tenniel.

While this version of Alice doesn't contain any of Lewis Carroll's wonderful poems it's a good introduction to Alice for children 0-5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flipping the pages of time, May 6, 2010

This review is from: The Nursery Alice (Paperback)
Length:: 2:50 Mins

We took some time to flip through The Nursery Alice by Lewis Carroll and John Tenniel, a book from the "Vintage books ~ restored" collection. On the soundtrack we've added the famous Minuetto from the String Quintet in E, Op. 11, No. 5 by Luigi Boccherini.
We hope you'll enjoy the clip (and the book, and the music) just as much as we did when filming it (and reading it, and listening to this sweet music).

1.0 out of 5 stars MISPRINTING!!!!!, November 29, 2010

The book is nicely made; the story's all there...but every set of quotation marks is misprinted. It's maddening. At the beginning of every character's speech, the quotation marks appear BELOW the word, instead of at the top left. ,,Like this!" I bought the book for young readers, so I'm returning it. ,,Right now!"

I didn't pick up on it, but you can actually see the misprinted quotation marks right on the front cover: ,,Alice"
