Renowned for its holistic perspective and "see and do" approach, this full-color, pocket-sized handbook offers step-by-step guidance on every phase of the nursing assessment—for adults, children, and special populations. The focus is on what nurses need to know to assess clients: the health history, physical examination, normal and abnormal findings, nursing interventions, and nursing diagnoses. This edition presents a complete update of all content and references, and contains new chapters on mental status and assessing frail, elderly clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars very handy December 12, 2011

The pocket guide is very handy. It is smaller than the hardback book and is lighter as well. I love using the pocket guide instead of the bigger hardback copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK! September 12, 2011
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
This book fits into your pocket, and has all the information you will ever need for assessments. no making index card after index card, and it has all the info you will need right in a small pocket guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best in terms of ease of use March 7, 2014
I have viewed many different clinical skills and assessment guides and I just personally think this one is set up so oddly. It is supposed to be a handbook for ease of access but I don't find it to be a quick reference guide. However, the information is excellent and complete. I wish I had bought the actual textbook version instead of the handbook version (which was recommended by my school so it could be brought easily to lab or clinical) because I don't find it "handy" at all. More of a sit down and read type of book in smaller format. I actually rarely use it now and tend to just google or reference note cards for the quick information I need. On a positive not, it is not information this handbook lacks. I am simply not a fan of the pictures and charts interrupting the flow of the explained assessment techniques. Perhaps it would have been better to have put the comparison charts or pictures at the end of each chapter after the assessment data has been explained. I say this because the book is supposed to be smaller and more condensed than a textbook. If you are using it as a review and already know what, say, retinal hemorrhages and cotton wool patches in the eye look like, you don't want a whole page of pictures interrupting the flow of your assessment explanation. But overall great book with well explained "normal" and "deviations from normal" data to look for in your assessment and how that can vary among pediatric and geriatric clients.

Purchased in good condition for a fair price. Arrived with cover torn off and front page ripped. Cover was not in shipping bag. Would describe it as poor condition and expected better. Format seems logical and diagrams, images and boxes are relevant for quick access. Thick book, not really for scrubs/lab jacket but good to have in locker. Would recommend book, just not the shipper I selected.

1.0 out of 5 stars WRONG BOOK May 16, 2014

I was not sent the book that is pictured. I ordered a hard back 7th edition and received a spiral 2nd edition. I was only charged a penny for the book but I did pay shipping for it and was very disappointed to have received the WRONG book! glad I didn't spend anymore on it. waiting to hear back from seller about replacing it with the correct book.
