Editorial Reviews

Review

"The course faculty chose this text because we felt that it spoke well to the new graduate nurse. This text gives excellent examples of the importance of leadership and management content from a perspective that is more easily understood when compared to other leadership texts that we considered. Content is clear and understandable. Speaks to the nurse at many levels of the organization. Provides evidence-based support in each chapter. His use of several authors with expertise in the content area heightens the appeal to this text."Tina Saunders, MSN, RN, CNE Kent State University, College of Nursing, Kent, Ohio

"Level of material was absolutely right on point. It is extremely readable with definitions and examples provided and is broken up nicely with tables, etc. to clarify topics. There was a great deal of new material regarding collective bargaining, etc. that I had not seen to that extent in other texts. The activities throughout and at the end of chapters would make this a very instructor friendly text. The grouping at the end of each chapter for web resources was also much appreciated. I enjoyed the real world interviews and evidence-based literature sections very much; believe they could initiate a great deal of class discussion. Again the text was extremely easy to read; flowed well from topic to topic and was thoroughly covered following each heading. The chapter organization was done well. Beginning with the historical background or current background and then moving from theory to actual practice was very viable and students could easily follow and understand. There were many practical on-the-job sections…"Jaclynn A. Johnson, RNC-OB, MSN, Otero Junior College

I had to buy this book for a nursing management class. Here are my complaints...it is not very concise (it rambles on and on) and the Preface states that there is an online companion to accompany the book but does not give you a website. It does not exist. On the plus side, there are a few NCLEX-style questions included, on the down-side, there is no way to check your answers because they are apparently supposed to be found on the non-existent online companion. I even called the Delmar Cengage help-line to find the website. The teenager I talked to put me on hold to look it up, then told me that I had to buy the answers and gave me an ISBN number I could type into my web browser to find the page that sells the answers. Nothing turned up. She then told me that she couldn't find anything on an online companion and that I was pretty much out of luck.

This seller was very prompt and offered a great deal. The book if you have time to read can provide important information about Leadership and Management that could potentially set you apart from other nurses who focus only on patient care; making your future job easier.

It was a required text for a program, it was useful and the table's were very helpful to know for the NCLEX-RN. If you need it I'd get it; but only pay half of what the on-campus bookstore is asking for brand new texts and that would be a fair price.

Got this book for a class, but I can see myself using it after the class to. I feel it is and will be very helpful throughout the nursing profession.

Used for Undergrad. Our professor had us use a lot. Although I am not really interested in management as much as I am about becoming a APN.

It reads like stereo instructions written by a bureaucratic committee. Unfortunately securing a A in the class actually necessitated reading the foul thing, or at least lengthy selections from it. It is droning, dry, and unnecessarily verbose. It also takes a pro-management view of nursing in negotiations, taking the position that the nurses are labor, and the reader is management. That's a difficult position for nursing students in their senior year to take.

My advice, then, to any student whose professor uses this book is to ask prior students how important the text is to the exams, and pass on it if at all possible.
