Martha Raile Alligood, RN, PhD, ANEF

Dr. Alligood is a Professor in the College of Nursing at East Carolina University. She holds a diploma in nursing from Good Samaritan School of Nursing, bachelor of sacred literature (BSL) from Johnson Bible College, BSN from University of Virginia, MS with a major in nursing from The Ohio State University, and PhD in nursing from New York University.

Her practice has included nursing of adults in medical-surgical, orthopedics, tropical diseases and mental health. She discovered her love of teaching nursing on the mission field as Sister Tutor (Director) of the School of Nursing at Mashoko Christian Hospital in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) Africa, then completed her nursing education for a career as a nurse educator.

Her research includes adult nursing theory testing studies and theories of empathy in the nurse-patient relationship with numerous presentations and publications. She is perhaps best known for her expertise in nursing theory and nursing knowledge development having taught doctoral (PhD) students for over 20 years. She collaborated with Ann Marriner Tomey on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of Nursing Theorists and Their Work and since Ann's retirement Alligood has completed the 7th edition of that text as well as the 4th edition of Nursing Theory: Utilization & Application published by Mosby-Elsevier both published in 2010. These books are published in many languages and used by nurses around the world.

Alligood has received numerous awards in her career and most recently, Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) Distinguished Researcher award in 06, Academy of Nursing Education fellow in 07, ECU Woman of Distinction in 08, Delta Epsilon Chi in 09, Board of Trustees at Johnson Bible College in 10, and she is to become contributing editor for the Theoretical Concerns column in Nursing Science Quarterly, a Sage Publication, for the 2011 and 2012 issues. She has served as a consultant to numerous schools and clinical agencies on nursing curricula, nursing knowledge development and theory based practice.
